WELCOME ...

to the official website of Cub Scout Pack 12 of Allentown, Pennsylvania.

We are an energetic pack comprised of boys from Allentown, Whitehall, Parkland and surrounding communities.

Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelos work hand in hand with leaders and Akela in their spiritual, scouting, community, environmental and personal growth. FUN is always the main ingredient in any outing or activity for members of Pack 12.

What Do We Do?  A whole lot would be the answer to that question. Here is a quick sample of some of the pack activities that we do:

  • Monthly Pack Meetings
  • Spring Campout
  • Summer Camp
  • Fall Campout
  • Holiday party for a local seniors home
  • Fall Bike & Boat excursion
  • Father's Day Picnic
  • Cubmobile Races
  • Raingutter Regatta
  • Pinewood Derby
  • Blue & Gold Dinner - with world class food & talent
  • Summer outing to CamelBeach
  • Winter Event
  • God and Me/God and Family classes (we are nondenominational)
  • Scouting for food
  • Individual Den Activities
  • ...and much more...

Den and pack meetings are held on Friday evenings - unless otherwise specified.

    JANUARY - PINEWOOD DERBY

Rev-up the engines and get ready for the green flag. It is time again for one of the highlights of the season, the Pinewood Derby.

Boys receive a standard Pinewood Derby car kit from which they will build a car that will look cool and race down a fabricated pinewood derby track. For specific rules on car width, height, weight, tires, etc., please see the forms section. MAKE SURE to read these rules carefully as cars may end up being disqualified from running if they fail to meet the specifications.

Pack 12 holds their Pinewood Derby in the month of January and on a Sunday afternoon. All boys are to bring their cars to the event completed - only needing final tune-up and weight check. Each car will be measured, weighed and examined by the judges. Cars that do not meet specifications will need to be modified prior to race time. Only those cars that have passed the check-in qualification will be allowed to race.

Pack 12 will be using their BRAND NEW track with an automatic timer. Cars are run by den. Cars do not race head-to-head. Cars are racing for best overall time in the entire pack. Each car will be given four runs - one on each lane of the track. The average time for all four runs is the time for the car. At the end of the event, the top 5 racers will qualify for districts - 6th being the alternate.

Cars are also judged for best design - so be creative.

    HINTS:

  • Make sure the wheels and axles are lubricated using approved dry lubrication. Also make sure the nub on the wheel is removed but be careful not to change the shape of the wheel or put a flat spot on the wheel.
  • Get the weight of the car as close to 5oz as possible without going over. Better to come in a bit light at official check in time - you can always add weight then. Trying to remove a lot of weight may hurt your design and chances.
  • Make your design as aerodynamic as possible. Some argue this does not matter and some argue it does matter.
  • Make sure to install your axles (nails) as straight as possible. This will help reduce the friction of the tires. Do not put your axles in too far - will limit your performance. Once you have the axles set to your spot - place some clear glue over the nail to make sure it stays in place -- DO NOT use colored glue or tape and do not get glue on the wheels. The glue must be clear so the judges can see the axle.
  • AT ALL COSTS - WE BUILD AND RACE TO HAVE FUN!

      FEBRUARY - BLUE AND GOLD

The Pack 12 Blue & Gold has become a well-known and respected function within scouting in the Minsi Trails council. Each year the Blue & Gold committee designs scenery, food, costumes and programs around the specific theme. More details to follow.

Pack 12 is unique to say the least in the Blue & Gold traditions. In past years we've had a luau, visited Egypt, and went back to the future and saw Elvis, Prince, Disco Don, Sherry The Flapper and even Lord Robert Baden Powell. Marty and Doc Brown were also pretty cool.

Go to our forms section below and you can see all the different scripts and directions we have for our blue & gold and cross-over ceremonies.

The real hits are the actual ceremonies. We want to make things special for all the kids so we have a very specific graduation ceremony for each level of Scout. The Tigers through Webelos 1 go through a formal candle lighting, marking and recognition. We always have a very special cross-over ceremony specific to the theme.

    VOLUNTEERS & LEADERSHIP POSITIONS
A Cub Scout program is only as good as the leaders and parent volunteers supporting the program. Each family will be expected to volunteer for a minimum of 2 activities during the year. Activities can range from buying food for camp, serving on Blue & Gold decorations committee to coordinating a coke wagon fundraiser.

Sign up early for an activity. Vacancies will be assigned to those who have not volunteered.

Pack 12 is lucky to have a dedicated set of leaders. However, there is a need for additional leadership positions for this year and next.

PLEASE HELP!! - Many long time members of Pack 12 have moved on to Boy Scouts. There is a big need for leadership positions. The pack is looking for people to step up and volunteer for these positions so our program can maintain its excellence.

Contact committee chairperson (Rachel Morgan) for more details and to volunteer for an activity.
