HISTORY OF THE RED HAT SOCIETY

THE RED HAT SOCIETY was given birth by "Queen Mother" Sue Ellen Cooper in 1998 when she and a couple of friends all were turning 50. Ms. Cooper was motivated by the poem "Warning" by Jenny Joseph which states: "When I grow old I shall wear purple dresses, clashing red hats, and do outrageous things". She bought her 2 friends red hats, told them to wear purple dresses and that she was taking them to tea. At the tea, she presented them with copies of Jenny Joseph's poem, which became their motto. Observers wanted to know what it was all about, and thus began the rapid growth of the sisterhood. Sue Ellen started emailing friends about the group, and was getting mail from many different parts of the world. Almost in defense, she created a web site and the rest is history..there are now over 41,000 chapters! No one is really sure of the total membership, but it is believed to be well over 1.5 million registered members in the United States and over 30 countries world wide.

There are no rules, and we adhere to a philosophy of "dis"-organization -- we just want to get together with friends and have fun. Many women under the age of 50 wanted to become part of the group, so it was decided that they could join as "ladies in waiting" and wear lavender dresses and pink hats until that wonderful life's milestone -- their 50th birthday, at which time they graduate to the wearing of the red & purple

If you want information, you may go to the Red Hat Society's official web site: www.redhatsociety.com

Anyone wishing to start their own chapter can get complete instructions from the web site.

Many chapters are started by women who have a common interest or hobby
