SchuylkillcCounty.jpgWelcome to the Schuylkill Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees.

Our membership is made up of school retirees from the following school districts: Blue Mountain, Mahanoy Area, Minersville Area, North Schuylkill, Pine Grove Area, Pottsville Area, Saint Clair Area, Schuylkill Haven Area, Tamaqua Area, Tri-Valley, and Williams Valley.

We are former teachers, administrators, counselors, nurses, aides, secretaries, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, maintenance staff — in short, anyone who is now receiving a pension from the Pennsylvania School Employees Retirement System.

Schuylkill Chapter continues PASR's mission to serve others in need and help one another enjoy retirement.

Message from Schuylkill Chapter President

Dear Friends and Fellow Retirees,
Winter has been a pleasant surprise this year ... it’s hard to believe we are well into - March and the weather has been so mild!

As you read through this newsletter, I hope that you find an article that will make you realize that it is important to belong to an organization that promotes a sense of camaraderie and good cheer and also keeps us abreast of the happenings in our everyday lives.

I do not want to get into a Democratic/Republican debate as we have had more than one too many debates already. It is very important that you read “all” that is being written and “all” that is being said and vote with an understanding of the issues at hand. Too many times we ignore the whole and decide to vote our individual likes and dislikes. That, my dear friends and colleagues, iswhy we are where we are ... knowledge of the whole is the most important factor in any election! One of our most important jobs is to get to know our legislators and for them to know us. We must let them know how we feel about the issues. They have to under- stand that they have their jobs because we elected them to work for us, their constituents. If they are not doing their job, then vote them out ... they don’t get another chance! We sit back and moan and groan and continue to do nothing in a positive manner. My motto has always been TEAM “Together Everyone Achieves More”! Along those same lines ... “Together We Stand, Divided We Fall”... a statement that goes back to Aesop. We have so much experience among us ... why are we not just a wee bit smarter?

Look forward to our annual picnic on September 13th. Mark it on your calendar. We hope to see you. Remember all are welcome. We are still trying to get e-mail addresses to cut down on our mailing costs. We not only need your address, but we also need your permission to send your newsletter in this manner. Please help us cut our costs.

I would like to encourage everyone to get involved as much as they can. It is necessary so that we can continue to send out newsletters, have our bi-annual meetings, volunteer, and just keep in touch with each other. I am also asking you to recruit new members. Thank you for your help.

Yours in retirement,
Joan M. Koslosky

HAPPY 75th ANNIVERSARY

Schuylkill PASR Chapter commemorated the 75th Anniversary for the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees during the spring meeting on May 8, 2012 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 300 West Arch Street, Pottsville.

PASR State President Steve Vak, a former Schuylkill County President was our guest and presented the re-dedication of our Schuylkill PASR Chapter charter.

President Vak also presented Schuylkill Chapter, President Joan M. Koslosky a Mock Check of $1,037,519 for Schuylkill PASR Community Service Volunteer hours of 48,573 which are documented in the education, social service, political, religious and service to youth categories.

In the Schuylkill PASR newsletter, members were reminded that “when we go to a birthday party, we take a gift...right?” So members who attended the 75th Birthday Party brought a gift! An entertaining and fun time was enjoyed with the distribution of the birthday gifts.

Volunteers
Count your hours

PASR Chapters are interested in documenting the services that volunteer retirees contribute to their local communities. In doing this, our volunteers show to the community a positive picture of the activities of public school retirees.

Community Service Surveys will also be available at the PASR 2012 Spring Luncheon Meeting.

Please begin to keep track of your hours now. We need the number of hours PER YEAR which you volunteer. The year runs from July 2011 to June 2012.

If you keep a record throughout the year, it will be so much easier to fill out the survey.

Please complete the survey by indicating the total number of hours for the YEAR in each category.
You can return the survey by bringing it to the Spring Luncheon or give it to Arline Hufnagle by May 30. It is important that the legislators are aware of the many hours our members volunteer. Thank you for all that you do and for fill ing out the survey.

 Cop 'n Kids

We will again be collecting new or gen- tly used books suitable for 1st and 2nd grade kids at our spring meeting on Tuesday, May 8th. You can also drop off books at the Faith Church, located on the right side of route 61 south of Schuylkill Haven just before Ark Rentals Wednesday mornings. Please designate the books for the Cops’ n’ Kids program and marked “attention Doug Cresswell”.

This year we will be distributing books to kindergarten and first grade students at Mahanoy Area Elementary School of the Mahanoy Area School District before the end of the school year.

If you would like to get in- volved with Cops’n’ Kids, please contact Joan at 570-640-4156 or mrsk7@verizon.net. We would like to encourage children to read a book this summer. Donate your time as well as books.
