INFORMATION FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE PA GAME COMMISSION ON JANUARY 11, 2008

At a meeting with the Regional Director of the Game Commission in Harrisburg on August 9, 2007, the Regional Director declined to grant another extension for removal of the old farmhouse from the property. (***See information at the bottom of the page). On January 11, 2008, however, the Executive Director of the Game Commission, in response to a letter sent by the President of WHHC thanking the Game Commission for affording WHHC the opportunity to preserve the house, stated: "As long as the house is still available to move, I will provide you that opportunity. As long as P&N Coal Company is using it, then there is no hurry for us to remove the building....We are more than willing to continue to give you the opportunity to move the building. I would be willing to allow you to move the building after its current use is terminated and would be willing to leave it there for a while longer providing you have a contract in place to move the building." WHHC is currently pursuing establishment of its heritage shop/museum; however, should $28,500 materialize to salvage the old farmhouse, the Game Commission has provided us with that option for the present time.

Winslow House Heritage Council received its 501 (c)(3) designation from the IRS in November. This means that Winslow House Heritage Council is recognized by the government as a PUBLIC CHARITY. CONTRIBUTIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE. This designation is also a requirement by private foundations for organizations seeking grant monies.

Working through a government agency to explore the establishment of a heritage shop/museum at an alternate location, WHHC's application is currently under review. Check this site for future updates.

In approximately 1818, Carpenter and Elizabeth Colburn Winslow and their extended families traveled from Maine on the Atlantic Ocean to the Chesapeake Bay; to the Susquehanna River; and following the West Branch of the Susquehanna arrived in Clearfield, PA. Here Carpenter built a bridge across the Susquehanna, and after a short time, the families moved overland to Gaskill Township, just outside Punxsutawney, PA, where they established a homestead. In 1828, Carpenter Winslow, Jr. and his wife, Beulah Keene Winslow, along with his brothers, Reuben and Ebenezer Winslow, moved on to what is now Winslow Hill in Benezette, Elk County, PA.

Carpenter Winslow and Elizabeth Colburn Winslow are buried in the old Findley Street Cemetery in Punxsutawney, PA. They are memorialized on the Winslow family obelisk at Circle Hill Cemetery. Recently members of the Winslow Family endowed "The Carpenter and Elizabeth Colburn Winslow Genealogy Room" at the Punxsutawney Historical Society.

Elizabeth Colburn Winslow was the daughter of Major Reuben Colburn who built "batteaux" at the order of General George Washington for a raid into Canada during the Revolutionary War, which was carried out by Benedict Arnold.

Carpenter Winslow is a descendant of Kenelm Winslow of Marshfield, MA, whose brothers were Edward and Gilbert Winslow of the Mayflower. Family members still retain a commission granted to Carpenter Winslow by Samuel Adams.

Additionally, the descendants of Carpenter Winslow, Jr. and Beulah Keene Winslow are eligible for membership in the Mayflower Society, Beulah Keene Winslow being the direct descendant of 6 Pilgrims who signed the Mayflower Compact.

Grave of Beulah Keene Winslow, Mayflower Descendant, at rest in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Winslow Hill
