INFORMATION FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE PA GAME COMMISSION ON JANUARY 11, 2008

At a meeting with the Regional Director of the Game Commission in Harrisburg on August 9, 2007, the Regional Director declined to grant another extension for removal of the old farmhouse from the property. (***See information at the bottom of the page). On January 11, 2008, however, the Executive Director of the Game Commission, in response to a letter sent by the President of WHHC thanking the Game Commission for affording WHHC the opportunity to preserve the house, stated: "As long as the house is still available to move, I will provide you that opportunity. As long as P&N Coal Company is using it, then there is no hurry for us to remove the building....We are more than willing to continue to give you the opportunity to move the building. I would be willing to allow you to move the building after its current use is terminated and would be willing to leave it there for a while longer providing you have a contract in place to move the building." WHHC is currently pursuing establishment of its heritage shop/museum; however, should $28,500 materialize to salvage the old farmhouse, the Game Commission has provided us with that option for the present time.

Winslow House Heritage Council received its 501 (c)(3) designation from the IRS in November. This means that Winslow House Heritage Council is recognized by the government as a PUBLIC CHARITY. CONTRIBUTIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE. This designation is also a requirement by private foundations for organizations seeking grant monies.

Working through a government agency to explore the establishment of a heritage shop/museum at an alternate location, WHHC's application is currently under review. Check this site for future updates.

DID YOU KNOW? "Ruben Winslow, a man of energy, founded Benezette...

In the year 1813, while the battle upon Lake Erie was being fought, which resulted in Perry's victory, the cannonading was heard all along the settlements within the limits of the township. The inhabitants, totally ignorant of the cause, and supposing it was an attack of the Indians on some other settlement, assembled and started a search of the Indians, continuing the pursuit for several days." WOMEN PIONEERS: "Native forest fruit was then abundant, game was plenty, the rivers were streams of crystal liquid. Women frequently performed a part of the farm service in that age, some with sickle and rake in hand doing the work of a harvest man. Others, with hoe and fork, did good work in the hay and corn field. One of them is remembered as placing her child in a sap-trough nearby, when but little over a week old, while she split more Rails in a day than her husband."(3)
