What is WOSA?

The Woodland Owners of the Southern Alleghenies, a non-profit organization, is comprised of landowners, forestry professionals and others from Bedford and Fulton Counties, Pennsylvania, interested in the methods and benefits of sound forest stewardship practices of privately owned woodlands.

In the mid 1990's eight Bedford County Lanowners had forest stewardship plans written for their properties. Each then took a 40-hour course sponsored by Penn State University and DCNR Bureau of Forestry and as a result became part of the statewide Volunteer Initiative Project (now PA Forest Stewards - PAFS) and began the Woodland Owners of the Southern Alleghenies (WOSA). WOSA's mission since its inception has been to educate landowners and the public about sustaining Pennsylvania's natural resources through stewardship practices. To that end, WOSA has been sponsoring an annual Forestry and Wildlife Conference since 1998 with speakers expert in their fields. The conference draws upwards of 100 people, many of whom are from outside the Bedford/Fulton area. WOSA also offers bi-monthly outings, most of them free, to the public from March through October.

What Does WOSA Do?
  • We invite professionals to share their expertise with us at our monthly outings, annual conference and annual banquet.
  • We conduct tours of both private and public woodlands to observe and learn about “hands-on” woodland stewardship practices.
  • We share our experiences, our ideas and our best practices.
  • Planning of the 2010 Conference is now underway. To help call Ben Tresselt at 814-652-9150.
