Writing Tips
I strongly suggest one continue to move forward with little regard to the notion of failure.
It is not failure to continue to write, live and learn. Writing is the process of discovering our true selves and others.
Writing is discovering and creating life!

Her intent in building and sharing this web site is to encourage others to engage in the excercise of stimulating the mind through the age old skill of writing. Feel free to browse.
The site will change regularly and new postings, stories, poems, prose and essays will be posted. The Beginning...  As I am writing and learning more each day how to write, I often wonder if God Himself knew what he really wanted to do with His word in the beginning.

For man to be in the likeness of God he must create.

Daily Inspiration For Writers
AUTUMN
Painted leaves careening in the wind.
Darkened clouds scudding across the sky.
Decayed leaves scenting the brisk air.
Trees giving their fashion show till they are clothed with winter, ice and snow.
Earth is readening for its winter rest.
Recovery time from the elements of summer.

by Alice O'Connell
Writing is like life-write each moment with meaning and purpose. Write each paragraph knowing it will impact someone. Write each chapter believing your story is important. Regina Butler/ 2006
WINDS
Winds blow leaves scatter.
Winds blow branches clatter.
Gentle winds fluttering curtains.
Strong winds scattering debris.
Powerful winds shattering lives.
Summer packs and heads south with her warmth and freedom.
Autumn sets up housekeeping with her colorful, crazy quilt.
Her sister winter arrives with a downy blanket of snow and frozen tears.
Spring awaits her time to bloom and grow once more.

This prose was created from a prompt. Directly after this piece, there are a few prompts given. Feel free to use them to create a prose, poem or story.

The Time Is Now... The time is now to move forward into the unknown to drink from the cup, which has been waiting to tip itself to you.

Take the risk and fall deeply into the unknown where the divine meets with the world.

The time is now to take up anchor and sail as the winds are blowing. Although the sea holds sharks, and waves that may tower over you, beyond the risk lies dolphins, waves and islands waiting to be explored.

The time is now to climb the oak tree you planted as a young woman;the limbs are strong enough to hold you and your dream. Begin now, the tree has matured.

The time is now to find the treasure; the treasure buried that should have been used. Open the chest and allow the gold within to shine. Share the treasure and watch it multiply.

The time is now to know all that was good is still, but the children have changed. Move forward knowing others will follow; their treasure was buried too. Shine your gold upon them and allow them to shine. Each piece of gold will illuminate into the hands of another. You may not know who possesses’ the gold, but you will know it has been spent.

The time is now to embrace the silence and ask the questions. The questions will lead you on your quest. The journey will be filled with uncertainty and adversity, the changes will occur rapidly and slowly, but the change will come. Embrace it now.

The time is now to journey onto the pages, into time, away from time, and beyond time. The Time is Now… RB October 2006.
This prose is dedicated to Kristin Mascioli- Breast Cancer Survivor.
PROMPTS:

The Writer's Prayer
Open my mind, Lord. Grant me the talent to write with clarity and style, so my words go down rich and smooth, like fine wine, and leave my reader thirsty for more. Open my heart, Lord. Grant me the sensitivity to understand my characters--their hopes, their wants, their dreams--and help me to confer that empathy to my reader. Open my soul, Lord, so I may be a channel to wisdom and creativity from beyond my Self. Stoke my imagination with vivid imagery and vibrant perception. But most of all, Lord, help me to know the Truth, so my fiction is more honest than actuality and reaches the depths of my reader's soul. Wrap these gifts with opportunity, perseverance, and the strength to resist those who insist it can't be done. Amen. -- Sandy Tritt (c) copyright 1999, Sandy Tritt. All rights reserved. <>
To avoid criticism, do nothing, say nothing, be nothing. Elbert Hubbard
<
On Critiquing:
The beginner writer may be hesitant about his/her story, poem or prose being critiqued. This is a common thought.
The truth is every writer needs feedback if he/she is going to make improvements in their writing.
Writing is communication. There must be a reader to share the writing with.
If you are trying your hand at writing for the first time, be selective about who you ask to critique your writing.

Once you have begun to ease into allowing another to read your writing, branch out and allow more people to read it (if they want to).

To Avoid criticism, write nothing.

Poetry and Passion
She Waits For Him

A burning hunger to know the desire, depth, and breath of another consumes her.

She looks toward the sky in anticipation, wondering when he will arrive.

Each cloud transfers a whisper from him. She hears him speak through the wind.

Though their bodies have not touched, she has felt him in her soul.

It is he who has created a stirring in her; an awakening to know of a great depth.

Each day the sun shines she rejoices in the beauty and bounty he has shown her.

As the rays touch on her face, she feels as if he has kissed her soft cheek.

When the rain appears, she knows it has been ordered by him, and turns up her palms to receive his thoughts of the love he has given.

Her skin drinks in the moistness as it refreshes her vessel.

Through the passing of his words she hears his mighty roar.

As her mind fills with thoughts of his strength, her weight is lifted.

He has handed her clarity that only comes through wanting him more.

The stories and letters he has sent reveal a wisdom that sustains her.

He causes her to move to experience in his movement. Knowing he is with her she keeps with his rhythm and follows.

He possesses her though he has not touched her.
She allows him to caress her soul.
She waits for him.

Regina's Writing Corner
Remember when your grandmother corrected your grammar and spelling. As a non-traditional student and a middle-aged woman entering college, I feared my grammar was not quite up to academic standards. I was correct. I had been away from the traditional methods of learning and was quite concerned knowing my grammar was rusty, but I did not allow this to discourage my passion to learn. Now, in my third year of college, I am a writer. My writing is not that of an Academician, but I am a writer. We all have the ability to write, but it must be developed and practiced. Writing is a gift. It costs nothing but time and, the willingness to explore on a piece of paper. It can be shared, hidden, and voiced. Writing can create laughter, sorrow, production, structure, chaos, blessings, money, love, destruction, music, books, and health. In general, writing can create life and inspiration for the writer and the reader as well. ________________________________________________________________________ Writing can be most effective if we practice or remember to use the grammar rules.

Here are some common errors made in sentences that can be easily remedied.
1. Comma Splices.
  • An example: Mary wants to go to Wal-Mart, Frank wants to go to watch the football game.
  • There are two complete thoughts in this sentence, so it is considered to have a comma splice.
  • Here are a few ways we can correct the sentence.
  • By placing a period between Wal-Mart and Frank we can create two sentences.
A conjunction or semicolon can also be used.
    • Example: Mary wants to go to Wal-Mart, but Frank wants to watch the football game.
    • Another example: Mary wanted to go Wal-Mart: her husband Frank wanted to watch the game.
    • Can you fix the sentence? Practice using the above solutions.
    • Lily wanted to open the window, Mike was standing on the ladder in front of it.

Learning the Words.
As one begins to settle into the world of writing, he/she will find a world full of terminology that is necessary in learning the craft.
A few of those words are:
diction- choosing words for effectiveness, clearness, and correctness.

syntax- How words are put together to form sentences and phrases. Or, how words are arranged.

Sentence fragment- A piece of a sentence.
Simile-Comparison when using like or as.
