YYÊÊÊÊ!! Welcome!

Capoeira serves as bridge to and a window into the musical and folkloric elements of Afro-Brazilian culture. It is a three hundred year-old social art which carries many of the concepts/beliefs/values that permeate Brazilian culture. Capoeira is very Brazilian in its expression and tradition and yet it is very accessible and open to people of all cultures. Capoeira allows people to experience different cultural values in a more organic form, through the practice and inclusion in the game of capoeira.

CAPOEIRA

Uma vez, perguntei a Seu Pastinha
O que era a capoeira
E ele, mestre velho, respeitado,
Ficou um tempo calado,
Revirando a sua alma
Depois respondeu com calma,
Em forma de ladainha:
A capoeira
É um jogo, é um brinquedo,
É se respeitar o medo,
É dosar bem a coragem
É uma luta,
É manha de mandingueiro,
É o vento no veleiro,
Um lamento na senzala
É um berimbau bem tocado,
É um corpo arrepiado,
Um sorriso de menininho

A capoeira
É o vôo de um passarinho,
O bote da cobra coral...
Sentir na boca
Todo o gosto do perigo,
É sorrir para o inimigo
E apertar a sua mão

A capoeira
É o grito de Zumbi
Ecoando no quilombo,
É se levantar do tombo
Antes de chegar ao chão
É o ódio,
É a esperança que nasce,
Um tapa sutil na face
Que foi arder no coração

Enfim,
É aceitar o desafio
Com vontade de lutar
A capoeira
É um barco pequenino
Solto nas ondas do mar..
Solto nas ondas do mar,
Solto nas ondas do mar..
É um peixe, é um peixinho,
Solto nas ondas do mar..
Solto nas ondas do mar,
Solto nas ondas do mar..

(Mestre Toni Vargas)

  A PREVIEW

Once I asked Mr. Pastinha
What capoeira was
He, an old, respected master,
Stayed silent for a moment,
Searching his soul.
Then he calmly responded to me
With a litany:
Capoeira
Is a game, a toy
It is to respect your fear
It is to bridle your courage
It is a fight
It is the smoothness of a con
It is the wind on a sailing ship
It is a moaning from the slave quarters
It is a berimbau played with skill
It is a body with goosebumps
It is the smile of a little boy

Capoeira
Is the flight of a little bird
The strike of a coral snake
It is to taste
The flavor of danger
It is to smile at your enemy
And then shake his hand

Capoeira
Is a cry from Zumbi
Echoing from the slave hideouts
It is to pull up from a fall
Before touching the floor
It is hatred
It is burgeoning hope
A gentle slap to the face
That will burn through to the heart

In sum,
It is to accept the challenge
With a will to fight
Capoeira
Is a little boat
Adrift in the ocean waves..
Adrift in the ocean waves,
Adrift in the ocean waves..
It is a fish, a little fish
Running freely in the ocean waves..
Running freely in the ocean waves,
Running freely in the ocean waves..

(Mestre Toni Vargas)

Os ensinamentos da capoeira...

Humildade
Você diz que sabe muito,
lagartixa sabe mais;

quem paga eh segunda-feira.

Oportunismo
A canoa virou marinheiro,
lá no fundo do mar tem dinheiro.
A onça morreu, o mato é meu!
Escorregar não é cair,
É um jeito que o corpo dá..,

Justiça
Se é de morrer Marcelinho,
Morra a mulher de Marça;
Se é de morrer quem dá gosto,
Morra quem gosto não dá..

Ingratidão
Quando eu tinha meu dinheiro,
Camarada me chamava de parente.
O dinheiro se acabou,
Camarado me chama de valente.
É verdade, meu colega,
sua palavra valeu;
o discípulo deu no mestre,
capoeira me venceu.

A vida
Sim, sim, sim
Não, não, não
Hoje tem, amanhã não

  The casual wisdom of capoeira...

Humility
You think you know it all,
Well, a lizard knows better;
It knows how to walk up a wall,
something you cannot do
Horatio from the woods, for lacking good manners,
when he arrived in Bahia, he died.
As the baloon rose, so the baloon came down..

Caution
He who makes love to another man's wife
leads an uncertain life..
A one-eyed chicken looks for the coop early on
Old holes carry snakes inside.
Courage is not in the cry,
nor is wealth in the purse.
The dues of Sunday,
are paid by Monday.

Opportuneness
If the canoe has turned over, mariner;
look for gold in the deep of the ocean.
The panther is dead, the woods are mine!
A slip is not a fall;
it is but a twist the body does..

Justice
If Marcel is to die,
May his wife die instead;
If he who pleases should die,
May the unpleasant ones die..

Ungratefulness
When I had money,
People called me "relative."
The money is gone,
People call me "roughneck."
That's right, my friend,
your word has rung true;
the disciple has beaten up the master;
capoeira has defeated me.

Life
Yes, yes, yes
No, no, no
Here today, tomorrow gone
