| Columbia's Historical Sites give visitors
a unique feel of the Old South. Great examples of the antebellum architecture still exist here, including an 1870's Victorian home which is open as a "house museum." The 35 year old Historic Columbia Foundation helps manage these homes for Richland County and the City of Columbia.
The Robert Mills House and Park, designed by Robert Mills, has a classical symmetric style and exquisite furnishings. The house was built as a home for Ainsley and Sarah Hall in 1823 but was never lived in as a personal home. Until the early 1960's the house served as a theological seminary and Bible college. Don't miss the garden which features a formal boxwood maze. The Hampton-Preston Mansion served as the center of family and social gatherings for the Hamptons and later the Prestons until the Civil War. Until 1970 the home was the site of a women's college. The Mann-Simons House built in 1850 was the home of Celia Mann - an African-American who purchased her freedom in the years before the Civil War. This cottage acted as a meeting place for many of the civic and church groups which formed in the African-American community. The Woodrow Wilson Boyhood Home is a great example of the Victorian influence in American architecture. Wilson, the 28th president of the United States, lived here as a teenager. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
