Conquer Your Fear

What is public speaking and why are we so afraid of it? Public speaking is nothing more than the extension of talking one on one, even if you have five, ten, or a hundred people to talk to. One winner of Toastmasters "World Champion of Public Speaking" has said, "Stage time, stage time, stage time". The more you do it, the easier it becomes.

People want and will listen to someone who will speak to them on a subject that is of interest to them. Think of your speach as nothing more than a conversation with the audience. How can you develop this technique? Here are a couple of ideas:

  • Think of your speach as answering a question posed by an audience member.
  • It's always good to tell a story or analogy to illustrate what you mean.
  • Talk to your audience, never at them.
  • Cite figures and statistics as needed.
  • Use gestures when appropriate.
  • Prepare and practice.
  • Try to get your audience to feel, think or act on something you've said, in other words, you want them to respond to your speech.
  • Be enthusiastic and believe you have something worth saying.

These are just a few ideas for you to try when giving your next speech. And if done correctly.....you will be a success!
