Philanthropic The Newcomers of Greater Greenville constitution and bylaws direct our annual support of charities. After careful consideration by the General Board and election by the General Membership, the charities selected for financial support during the 2008-2009 organizational year are: Meals on Wheels of Greenville and Greer, Susan G. Komen of the Upstate and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Greenville Chapter. In addition, Newcomers of Greater Greenville has pledged their volunteer support to the newly opened Greenville Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. It’s been an inspiring year! We’ve achieved so much and given so much of our time and talents. We even donated 20% more than in the past year! At the August 19th Kick-off Coffee, we selected through majority vote to support three charities for the 2008-2009 year with our time and talents. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Meals On Wheels and Susan G. Komen. Though our vote would have had us supporting only The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society with our time and all three with our donations, the volunteer needs of all three charities were made known each month through the newsletter and announcements at coffees. And we responded! We supported the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society office through stuffing of mailings, preparing for and participating in the Light the Night Walk and Team In Training, and in designating our personal financial support through the BMW ProAm Golf Classic and the use of our Bi-Lo Bonus Cards. We supported Susan G. Komen through similar opportunities to support their office in preparation for and participation in the Race for The Cure and The Inspiration House. We supported Meals On Wheels in preparation of and delivery of meals, serving as a courier or greeter and working in the office in support of mailings and with clerical tasks.
Our support through fundraising of Light The Night and the Race for the Cure is impressive.
At the May 19th Installation Luncheon, we presented checks to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Meals On Wheels and Susan G. Komen totaling $6,000: a $1000 increase over the prior year. It has been a gratifying year for me and I thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Philanthropy Chair. I am pleased to pass the baton to Irene Friedman as I know she has a heart of gold and is looking forward to continuing to support our charitable efforts in the Greenville community. Irene asks that you call or email her with your thoughts and desires as to whom and how to support our community charities. You can call Irene at 864-329-1196 or email her at irenerf@aol.com |
