Commandant Godfrey Signing Up A Prospective Member at the Loris Bog-Off

Several members worked together to spread the word about the Marine Corps League and our detachment at the Loris Bog-Off held on October 15, 2005 in Loris, SC. We signed up one new member as well as getting contact information for 13 more marines who were interested in our organization. This event was a huge success and we plan to continue participating in these types of events in Aynor and Conway as well.

In other news, members who participated in Operation Wounded Warrior were presented with Distinquished Citizen Bronze Awards from Commandant Godfrey at the October meeting. These awards were to recognize and commend these individuals for their hard work in making this Operation a HUGE success!

About Our Detachment

We are a fairly new detachment, organized during August of 2004 and Chartered on September 7, 2004. Our meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month at 6:00 pm (That's 1800 hours for you Marines!). Please see the map below for directions to our meeting location at Ryan's on Highway 501 in Conway.

All active duty Marines as well as veteran Marines who served at least 90 days and received an honorable discharge are eligible for membership. Our dues are $25.00 per year and lifetime memberships are also available.

We would love to meet other Marines in the Conway area, so if you are a Marine and are interested in joining or just attending one of our meetings, you can e-mail us at the link below for more information.

Members Attend SE Division Conference
Members of the detachment recently attended the Marine Corps League Southeast Division Conference which was held on March 2-4, 2006 in Myrtle Beach, SC. The Conference featured a special presentation about the new Marine Corps Museum which will be opening in November, 2006 and is located in Quantico, VA. A trip to visit the museum is in the planning stages for league members from across the state.

Detachment Members Get Together For Fourth of July Picnic
Several members enjoyed a covered dish supper and cook-out to celebrate the Fourth of July. The event was held at the home of David Graham, Detachment Sgt. At Arms, and his wife Marian. Of course, Harold Fleming did most of the cooking - yum, yum!! BBQ, rice, slaw, corn on the cob, burgers and dogs and of course, for dessert, Susan’s home-baked brownies! We all had a fun time watching the chef and his assistants and we enjoyed a wonderful meal and some great conversation. This will probably become an annual event, so plan to attend next year.

LOCAL BUSINESSES SPONSOR TRIKES FOR TIKES PROGRAM

We are pleased to announce that, thanks to the generosity of six local business people, our Trikes For Tikes Program was able to present specially made, hand-pedalled tricycles to six local children. Charter Member Harold Fleming was the driving force behind this project, contacting the sponsors and getting donations, even though he had just been released from the hospital!! Members of our detachment, as well as parents of the children and Horry County Schools Physical Therapist Debbie Truett (who was GREAT at helping us find our kids!), presented these trikes at our Southeast Division Conference held in Myrtle Beach on March 2-4, 2006.

We are planning to make this an annual event to be held in the spring of each year. For that to happen, we will continue to need sponsors. Each trike costs $250.00 and the only way we can aquire them is through the sponsorship of local companies, organizations and individuals.

If you or your company would be interested in helping with this worthy project, please e-mail us and we will provide you with additional information. If you know of a child who could benefit from a gift of one of these tricycles, please e-mail us and we will be in touch.

As you can see from the photo, these trikes offer a way for these special youngsters to be just like all the other kids in the neighborhood. It's really a joy to see the eyes of a child light up when presented with one of these trikes!

History of The Marine Corps League

The Marine Corps League was founded by Major General Commandant, John A. Lejeune, in 1923 and chartered by an Act of Congress on August 4, 1937. Its membership of 60,000 is comprised of honorably discharged, active duty and Reserve Marines with 90 days of service or more, and retired Marines. It includes officer, enlisted, male and female members.

The Marine Corps League is headed by an elected National Commandant, with 14 elected national staff officers who serve as trustees. Day to day operations are under the control of an executive director who supervises the day-to-day performance of the national headquarters staff, located at 8626 Lee Highway in Fairfax, Virginia.

The prime authority of the League is derived from its charter and from its annual national convention held in August in different major U. S. cities throughout the nation. The National Commandant has operational control over the National Headquarters staff and the National Board of Trustees, who in turn coordinate the efforts of 47 department, or State entities, and the activities of over 812 community-based detachments located throughout the United States and overseas.

The League is classified as a veterans / military service organization and was formed for the purposes of promoting the interests of the U. S. Marine Corps; to provide camaraderie and assistance to Marines, as well as to their widows and orphans; and to preserve the traditions of the U. S. Marine Corps. It is a not for profit organization within the provisions of Internal Revenue Service Code 50l (c) (4), with a special group exemption letter which allows for contributions to the Marine Corps League, its Auxiliary and subsidiary units, to be tax deductible by the donor.

League members participate in: - The Veterans Administration Voluntary Service Program, an assistance program for hospitalized veterans - A national Service Program, which provides assistance to veterans in a wide area of matters relating to their military service

The League also: - Awards scholarships - Sponsors a National Youth Physical Fitness Program - Provides membership incentives - Participates in patriotic functions and provides representation to the U. S. Congress in legislative matters affecting the U. S. Marine Corps, national security and veterans benefits through its National Legislative Committee and its National Legislative Officer - Participates in Toys for Tots and other community based programs

Mission Statement
Members of the Marine Corps League join together in camaraderie and fellowship for the purpose of preserving the traditions and promoting the interests of the United States Marine Corps. This is accomplished by banding together those who are now serving in the United States Marine Corps and those who have been honorably discharged from that service; voluntarily aiding and rendering assistance to all Marines and former Marines and to their widows and orphans, and by perpetuating the history of the United States Marine Corps through fitting acts to observe the anniversaries of historical occasions of particular interest to Marines.
