Goals of the Palmetto Gourd Patch

Welcome to the Palmetto Gourd Patch

The Palmetto Gourd Patch was established so we can share our love of gourds. Promoting the growing of gourds, sharing the love of gourd art, and letting everyone know how to safely work with gourds - that is our purpose. Come and join us. We readily share our talents and abilities with each other and we have FUN!

March 13,2010 Masks

We will be using wood burning and carving techniques we learned to make a mask. The following is a suggested list of supplies and equipment to bring if you have them. If you have extra, maybe you could bring some to share.

1. Gourd that has been cut in hald to make a mask shape. Canteen, apple, martin, etc gourds cut lenghwise will make a good shape for a mask. Clean the back side of the mask.
2. Wood burner or carver or dremel with carving bits or hand carvers or gouges to use for decorationg the mask.
3. Feathers, beads, porcupine quills, leather strips, horsehair, bones, jingle cones, stones to inlay, conchos, waxed linen thread or sinew, raffia, etc to decorate mask.
4. Paints, inks, leather dyes, clays, etc if you want color.

Use your imagination. Google gourd masks on the computer to see some samples. Here are some web sites I found:

January Meeting
January's meeting was a wonderful informative meeting for old and new members. We went over how to prepare your gourd for the projects we will be doing this year. The following pictures will give you a good idea. Don't miss next month when we will be talking about tools like wood burners and carvers.

Peggy is showing a tool for cleaning (scrub buster) and Betty is scrubbing a gourd.
