Low Bas Relief Carving

Gary’s Classes:

Low Bas Relief Carving, Chappells – Friday, 9/17 - 9:00 am to 4:00 pm with ½ hour for pot luck lunch. Cost - $65. Intermediate.

“Participants will learn the technique of low-bas relief carving. This will be achieved by the creating an uncomplicated pattern on a gourd surface which has previously had its outer smooth surface removed. The finished project will be ready for painting, staining, or a clear finish. (to be done at home)”. Materials list supplied to all participants.


Using Inlace Carving

Using InLace Carving, Chappells – Saturday, 9/18 – 9:00 am to 4:30 pm with ½ hour for pot luck lunch. Cost - $65 - Intermediate/Advanced.

“ Students will learn to prepare a gourd for the application of InLace (a 2 part resin), how to mix and apply the InLace, and finally, how to carve in a design. We will carve into a whole gourd and apply the InLace which will take a day to cure before it can be carved. Therefore, students will also be supplied with a previously prepared medallion (by the instructor) to carve during the workshop time. The gourd itself is to be completed as a second project at home.” Materials list supplied to all participants.


Chip Carving

Chip Carving, Chappells – Sunday, 9/19 – 9:00 am to 4:00 pm with ½ hour for pot luck lunch. Cost - $65 – All Levels.

“This class involves the use of hand gouges to create geometric and figurative images. Paints are applied to finish the designs. The carving will be done on a 6”-8” gourd. Fee includes use of tools and gourd.”

Open Coil , Greenville – Friday, 9/17 – 9:30 am to 4:30 pm with ½ hour for pot luck lunch. Cost - $50 – All levels.

“The class goal is to create a unique piece of art using paper core on an uneven gourd surface. Accents of beads, nuts etc can be applied. All materials supplied including gourds, waxed linen, paper core and needles as well as a tutorial. Students supply scissors, apron, and awl).”

Closed Coil, Greenville – Saturday, 9/18 – 9:30 am to 4:30 pm with ½ hour for pot luck lunch. Cost - $60 – All levels.

“The class goal is to learn how to prepare a gourd for coiling, begin and end a closed coil on a gourd, as well as add and change thread. Students will start the pattern on row one and continue on to complete 3 rows of coiling with pattern. A completely coiled three-row pattern will take a full day, from prepared gourd to finished design. Materials supplied (except for scissors, apron, awl).”

Pine Needle Coil, Chappells – Sunday, 9/19 – 9:00 am to 4:00 pm with ½ hour for pot luck lunch. Cost - $50 – Beginner.

“The class goal is to create a unique piece of art using pine needles on an uneven gourd surface. Accents of beads, nuts etc can be applied. Gourd base will be sponge painted with metallic glazing on surface. All materials supplied - including a tutorial. Students may bring accent pieces such as dried seed pods, feathers or specialty beads. Bring scissors, apron and awl.”

THURSDAY, SEPT. 16
On Thursday, Sept. 16, the Devines have offered to repeat any of the above classes for a smaller group of students. If you can get 5 – 6 students together, please let Peggy McCarson know the names and which class. Class will be in Chappells.

Lottery on first day of registration (7/06/2010) will determine Thursday class if more than one request is made.

Registration Procedures:
All complete registration forms received by July 6, 2010 will be entered into a lottery. When maximum class size is reached, a waiting list will be formed. You will be notified by mail of the classes you received. At this time, you will send in your class fee (made payable to Upper SC Basketmakers Guild). Deadline for returning class fees is July 26, 2010. Registration fee ($5 or $8) is non-refundable if you are selected for a class. Cancellations made before August 23rd may receive a refund minus a $25 handling fee. Cancellations after 8/23/2010 will receive gourd and instruction materials (you must make arrangements to pick this up). Materials list sent with notification of class assignments.
