Meetings for 2011

February Meeting - Gourds Stands - Peggy Ash

HAVE A GOURD THAT YOU WANT TO USE, BUT IT WON'T STAND UP THE WAY YOU WANT IT TO??
Make a stand for it!!!! [ or two or three]

Supplies:

[ MASK for your protection from the cutting out & prepping/cleaning the inside of the stand]
Please don't make me give a lecture on the hazards of gourd dust!!!!
gourds of course [ any round gourd will do, try to keep the size of the gourd you are going to display in mind]
Really good way to use up the less than perfect gourds you have [ ie: crack in bottom, bug bites, warts, sm hole, etc.)
Pencil with eraser [ or use a Mr. Clean sponge piece, my favorite eraser] baby wipes are also great
Drafters compass [ can be from the dollar store/ Wal Mart] point on one end, pencil on the other [ I have a couple]
Excacto knife or whatever you like to use to make a hole for you gourd saw start. [A drill can be used, but frequently will leave a telltale mark]
Gourd saw [ I have a couple to share] you may need an extension cord, too - [bring extra blades; just in case, if you have them]
Gourd Scribe [ you know; the marker you have... that is a pencil in a stand to mark a rim etc.] or a circle template [like scrap bookers use] or various size wood or plastic embroidery hoopsc4h 5h 6h would probably be the most useful sizes - [ I have a scribe, a template & hoop to share]
A bastard file or 4 in hand file - if you don't have one, don't go out & get one, I have both to share
Sand paper of choice to clean up the edges &/plus whatever you use to clean the underside [inside of the gourd; ie: scraper, canning jar lid, ball cleaner, etc.]
If you wish to stain, paint, burn, or sand/buff your gourd stand in class, bring those supplies - the finish is up to you.
I will try to have several types finished to show.

I will have coarse sheet sand paper to tape to the tables to level our stands.
I have also made a circle template for every one to have & keep as well as a tutorial & a few extra supplies that may come in handy.
I always try to have at least one of every supply on hand to share, but if everyone has & brings at least a few of the supplies, it makes the project go much faster

These stands are easy and fun, & very useful for your art work displaysc. You can make them in many ways, styles, & sizes to go with your particular artistic bent ..........

 March Meeting: Birdhouse and Birdfeeders

Bring an idea for making a birdhouse and/or birdfeeder - you can bring examples too. Bring a gourd you want to make a house or feeder from for our flying friends. You will need something to make a hole or cut the feeder. Also a tool for cleaning out - a bent coat hanger is good. You will need supplies for decorating your gourd (ezamples: gouges for chip carving, paints, carver, wood burner, etc.)
