State House Rally ![]() Red Hat Society 10th Birthday Celebration
Almost 200 Red Hatters gathered together and celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Red Hat Society on Saturday (April 19, 2008)at the State House in Columbia. Traditionally Red Hat members aged 50 and over wear purple clothing topped with a red hat. In their birth month they have the privilege of reversing their colors to stand out as a birthday celebrant in their purple hats. Since this has been declared the year to celebrate a "Decade of Sparkle", Red Hat Society Hatquarters has declared everyone the freedom to reverse colors for the entire year. The younger members also have the same privilege with reversing their traditional lavendar clothing and pink hat.
No matter how you put it together it makes for a colorful and spirited group The festivities began with a stroll around the State House, playing their kazoos, chanting, singing, and carrying banners. The birthday of their Red Hat Society was recognized in song and shouts of celebration.
