Sweet Magnolias | Sweet Magnolias, Chapter #3749, Charleston, SC | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple with a Red Hat! These are the words that inspired Sue Ellen Cooper to present a red hat to her friend. They started out just to have tea with close friends. Well you all know what happened after that! We, the Sweet Magnolias, are a part of the vast society of beautiful, vibrant women who come together to enjoy ourselves to the limits of our imagination... Our club was chartered in February of 2002, and we are proud to say that we are the oldest continuously operating club in the Charleston and surrounding tri county area. We have never waivered in our quest for fun and frolic. We have found a haven of happiness among our members who have reached a certain age and place in their lives. Our objectives are to take time for ourselves and laugh and play together. There are no rules in the RHS, only strong suggestions. We enjoy flaunting our beautiful red hats, purple attire, glitzy jewels, and feather boas. We even let the younger ones play with us if they want, but they wear pink hats, lavender clothing, glitzy jewels and feathers. At the magic age of 50 (if they are worthy) we allow them to “red”uate to the full glory of Red Hatting. We meet to have fun and share food, we shop, we march in parades, we sing, we dance, we laugh, and sometimes we cry. We enjoy theater, plays, games, picnics, taking trips as a group, crafts/scrapbooking and of course tea parties. We play dress up and share girl friend fun when and where ever we go. We enjoy sharing our fun with other clubs on a local, regional, state and national/international level. We are proud to be a part of the Historic Charleston Region #2 in South Carolina. The Sweet Magnolias meet the last Wednesday of each month. We are a dues paying club and have enjoyed a large membership from the beginning. We accept new members twice a year upon approval by the membership. As members we pledge to embrace each other as Red Hat Sisters and uphold the ideals set forth by the Sweet Magnolias and the founding Mothers of the Red Hat Society. The Red Hat is our symbol of friendship, fun and fabulous women. We take pride in our appearance, display good manners and conduct ourselves as ladies (most of the time) embarking on new adventures and embracing aging as never before. Red Hat Wisdom: FOUR LEVELS OF HATTERS - WHAT IS YOUR LEVEL?
Level 1 - "Highly Involved" - not only do you wear colors, but you enjoy gaudying and glitizing up - you wear hats - you attend area and national conventions - you RSVP on time - correspond with ladies in other chapters - collect anything red and purple - and you enjoy telling others about the RHS.
Level 2 - "Normally Involved" - wears colors - has fun- you RSVP on time - may or may not enjoy talking about the RHS.
Level 3 - "Barely Involved" - wears colors but doesn't really like to - doesn't wear hat or colors at times - waits until the last minute to RSVP.
Level 4 - "Don't Know Why They Bother" - won't wear a hat - won't RSVP - has to be called and reminded of gatherings.
THE FOLLOWING CAN HAPPEN
Level 1 - Ladies really enjoy every event and take an active part in planning fun things for the chapter to participate in - tell everyone they see about the RHS - love the glitz and colors that tell the world they are RED HATTERS.
Level 2 - After a few gatherings, you can get excited and really blossom into glorious red/pinkhatters. It just takes you a little time to gaudy up.
Level 3 - A few may finally come around, but the most you can expect from them is to grow into a Level 2. They may or may not get interested and get into dressing the part and taking their part in planning activities.
Level 4 - You just are not ready for the RHS. You may be the sort of woman who is not happy and will never be happy no matter what. You are just not ready to play with the big girls. Go find something else to do and don't spoil the fun for others around you.
Where do YOU fit into this picture? Only you can determine how much or how little you are willing to contribute. Come on girls, let's get going! Out of the rocking chair and out having girlfriend fun with the RED HAT SOCIETY. Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming…
Life is short. Break the rules, forgive quickly, kiss slowly, love truly and laugh uncontrollably. And never regret anything that made you SMILE.
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we should DANCE!
