Welcome!!             

The Upper South Carolina Basketmakers Guild welcomes you to this website. We are an organization dedicated to the teaching and sharing of basketmaking ideas and skills. Our guild meets the 1st Thursday of every month at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior at 6:30 pm. The church is located down from Red Lobster on the way to Taylors at 2600 Wade Hampton Blvd., Greenville, SC 29615.

    South Carolina State Fair===== If you are interested in submitting a basket to the SC State Fair, go the website www.scstatefair.org. ===Bonnie Geiger has offered to take the baskets to Columbia if you have registered online and bring the baskets to the Sept. 18 Lakelands meeting. She will return them at the November 20th meeting.


    PROPOSALS FOR GBA AND NCBA CONVENTIONS: Next year a guild member will make the basket we donate to the Georgia and North Carolina Conventions. If you are interested in making this basket (with reimbursement between $50 and $100), please submit a picture or sketch of the basket to Linda Harriz by the August 5th meeting. The board will pick a basket to be made and donated. We will also have the possibility of making a "themed" basket with other members donating items to fill the basket.


  • SOUTH CAROLINA WEEKEND WITH THE DEVINES!! On Sept. 16 through Sept. 19, the Upper SC and Lakelands Basketry Guilds in conjunction with the Palmetto Gourd Society will host Gary and Catherine Devine - famous authors and artisans of gourd carving and coiling. Gary will teach carving in Chappells and Catherine will teach 2 coiling classes in Greenville and a pine needle coiling in Chappells. Please open the following flyer and registration form to join in this fabulous weekend. The registration form also contains a list of supplies needed for the carving classes.     OPENING RECEPTION - Please join Pati English on Sept. 11 at the Pickens County Museum of Art and History as she becomes the guest curator for the Basketry Artisans exhibit. The reception will start at 7:00 pm and will also feature other members of our guilds.

    Marianne has completed her book on Weaving on a Gourd. She is now taking pre-orders for signed copies of the book. Contact Marianne at maribasket@charter.net or 864-244-3297.     Marianne is now working on her second book "New and Different Materials for Weaving and Coiling." She is interested in talking and working with weavers who use contemporary materials such as wire, paper, etc. Please contact Marianne if you have information on using natural materials in weaving.

If you have donated your time, supplies, help, or baskets to help a cause, to teach children, to promote the guild, please take a minute to fill out the form.     CONGRATULATIONS

  • Dolores von Rosen placed first for her "Diamonds" basket (taught at our Weave In) at the SC Festival of Flowers in Greenwood. Dolores also placed 2nd place for her blue metal jewelry necklace.
  • Maxine Riley has a basket juried into the 31st Annual Juried South Carolina artists Exhibtion at the Pickens County museum of Art and History. The exhibition opens April 24 and will run till June 10.
  • Pati English has been invited to serve as Guest Curator at the Pickens County Museum of Art and History. The Exhibit of Basketry Artisans will be in the new Focus gallery with an Opening reciption on Saturday, 9/11/2010. The exhibition will open through the middle of November. See our newsletter for more details.
  • Marianne Barnes was juried into the Southwest Gourd Fine Art Show at the Kerr Art and Cultural Center. She will have 4 or 5 woven gourds in the show May 27 - July 11, 2010 in Kerrsville, Texas. Visit http://www.kacckerrville.com.
  • Pati English's new basket placed 3rd in the juried competition at the North Carolina Basket Convention, 2010.
  • Maxine Riley has two baskets juried into the Annual Blue Ridge Arts Council Exhibit in Seneca, SC. The show runs through March 10.
  • Lee Sipe has recently been nominated by the SC Arts Commission for inclusion in the SouthernArtistry.org - a juried on-line artist registry for artists in the Southeast. Visit her link at www.SouthernArtistry.org/Lee_Sipe

    2010 Lakelands Basketry Guild Projects:

    The Lakelands Guild posted above as part of the combined edition of Upper SC and Lakelands Guilds. The Guild has had GREAT success with the year long project of making baskets from Lyn Siler's book. We have been able to go home every month with a terrific basket. Our next projects are:

  • July 17 - Wool Dying Basket - contact Dolores if you want feet, handles or entire kit as soon as possible. Pot Luck for lunch. Cost is about $30.
  • August 21 - Flat Shaker Bottom - Scottie Jeffries and Jane Wilson. Contact Scottie by August 1 if you want handle and/or kit. Pot luck for lunch. Cost is approximately $6.

    Directions to Church.
    The Lutheran Church of Our Savior is located at 2600 Wade Hampton Blvd., Greenville, SC 29615. From the corner of Wade Hampton Blvd and Pleasantburg Dr. (where the Red Lobster is located), head toward Taylors and Greer. The church is on the right, 1.4 miles past the Red Lobster. You can turn before the church or right after onto McKinney Lane and then take the first right.
