John_C._Campbell_Breast_Cancer_Class_Oct_2011[1].jpgWelcome!!

Welcome to the Upper South Carolina Basketmakers Guild.

The purpose of our Guild shall be to promote the art and tradition of basketry through instruction, public service, and community awareness. Members shall fulfill the guild’s purpose by participation in regularly scheduled meetings; conferences, workshops, conventions, gatherings, etc; local, regional, and national art and craft shows, exhibits, demonstrations, etc.

Our meetings are at Lutheran Church of Our Savior at 2600 Wade Hampton Blvd. (Hwy 29), Taylors, SC 29615. (The church is located between the Red Lobster on N. Pleasantburg and the Wade Hampton Plaza Shopping Center. Turn onto Cherokee Dr.) Our usual meeting time is the 1st Thursday of every month at 7:00 pm. We will have 3 to 4 Saturday meetings throughout the 2011 year. Please see the schedule below.

The picture above shows the baskets made by students in Pati English's Breast Cancer Basket class at John C. Campbell Folk School (see link to the left) during October, 2011.

New and Different Materials for Weaving and Coiling by Marianne Barnes will be available in April. The book gives techniques for gourds and baskets. In addition to the work by Marianne, this new book also features patterns and baskets from Pati English and Sandy Roback. • February 2nd Meeting - Embellishments. At this meeting, members will bring a basket and then be shown how to embellish the basket with curls, flower, stems, etc. For members who need help making the basic basket, Peggy McCarson will be at the church at 6:00 pm to help members start a wall basket. This basket will have 3 horizontal spokes and 7 vertical spokes that will make a 7" x 3" base. The sides will be 20 - 22 rows of 1/4" to 7mm reed. Students will then add the embellishment of their choice and finish rimming the basket at home. Let Peggy McCarson (864-963-1799 or pmccarson@charter.net)know by Jan. 15 if you would like this basic kit ($7.00).

Guild members have shared embellishments. The two documents here show the different types of embellishments. The one from Dolores von Rosen is based on her pattern for waste paper basket but can be applied to any basket.
