Welcome!!                                                                                

The Upper South Carolina Basketmakers Guild welcomes you to this website. We are an organization dedicated to the teaching and sharing of basketmaking ideas and skills. Our guild meets the 1st Thursday of every month at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior at 6:30 pm. The church is located down from Red Lobster on the way to Taylors at 2600 Wade Hampton Blvd., Greenville, SC 29615.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE NEWSLETTER:

  • Jan. 7 - We will meet at the Greenville Art Museum to hear a Sweetgrass presentation.
  • Feb. 4 - Meet at 10,000 Villages, Augusta Rd., 4:30 pm to pick out baskets for Georgia and NC Convention Raffles. Regular meeting at 6:30 - Basket for a Friend.
  • Please let Peggy McCarson know if you need a kit for the Basket for a Friend. Deadline Jan. 1.
  • Changes to our constitution:

    1. Change to "3 members at large" so that all areas of the upstate can be represented.

    2. Change to "meetings will be held on 1st Thursday or at a date determined by the Board." Hopefully we can have a few Saturday meetings.

    On Nov. 14, the Guild had a very successful workshop with over 30 weavers attending. Over $400 was raised for our "goody liners". Thanks to all who participated.


    CONGRATULATIONS TO MARIANNE BARNES!!!

    Marianne has completed her book on Weaving on a Gourd. We should be able to get a copy in the fall or 2010. Sandy Roback contributed to this project. We can't wait to see and learn. Way to go Marianne!!!

If you have donated your time, supplies, help, or baskets to help a cause, to teach children, to promote the guild, please take a minute to fill out the form.     CONGRATULATIONS

  • Dolores von Rosen's "Spiral" won 2nd place at the SC Festival of Flowers on June 27, 2009.
  • Pati English's Spiral Changes won first place at NCBA, wicker professional division. This basket, plus another creation, is part of the South Carolina Palmetto Hands Traveling Exhibition.
  • Maxine Riley has two baskets juried into the Pickens County Museum Art Show that runs through June 11.

    2010 Lakelands Basketry Guild Projects:

    Next year the Guild will use Lynn Siler's Basket Book as a guide to our monthly projects. Lynn's first book (The Basket Book) is out of print; her other book (The Ultimate Basket Book) contains the baskets from the first book plus additional projects. Either book will suffice for next year's projects. The Ultimate Basket Book can be ordered from NC Basketworks or from Amazon. Used copies of the first book, The Basic Book, are also available at Amazon.

    LAKELANDS HAS ALSO CHOSEN TO HAVE CLASSES ON SATURDAY. MEMBERS WILL NOW HAVE TIME TO MAKE A COMPLETE BASKET.

  • March 20 - 9:00 am - Wine Basket - Instructors: Peggy McCarson and Sara Lindsay - pg. 104 or 24. NOTE: An optional top row weaving in colored or smoked reed will be offered for this class.

    NOTE: THE 11 PEOPLE LISTED IN THE MINUTES HAVE AGREED TO PURCHASE KITS FOR THESE BASKETS. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ATTEND THE WORKSHOP AND NEED A KIT, PLEASE CONTACT THE INSTRUCTORS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

    • Priscilla Phillips and Jean Arden will teach with the Furman FUHLIR program this fall.
    • Elaine Robson sponsored a successful diagonal plaiting class at her home this summer.

As a student, you have one-on-one access with the teacher, a chat room to help you create your basket or gourd, and a timeline that fits your schedule. What a unique way to work with gourds and baskets!!!

    Directions to Church.
    The Lutheran Church of Our Savior is located at 2600 Wade Hampton Blvd., Greenville, SC 29615. From the corner of Wade Hampton Blvd and Pleasantburg Dr. (where the Red Lobster is located), head toward Taylors and Greer. The church is on the right, 1.4 miles past the Red Lobster. You can turn before the church or right after onto McKinney Lane and then take the first right.
