What is Habitat for Humanity?
Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical housing ministry that seeks to eliminate
poverty housing from the world and make descent shelter a matter of conscience.
With people from all walks of life working together in Equal Partnership, Habitat builds
new relationships and a sense of community as well as housing.
How HFH Families Are Selected?
HFH families are selected based on their 1. need for housing 2. ability to repay the loan 3. willingness to partner with HFH.
1.You will be considered for a HFH house if your present housing is not adequate for your family's needs, and if you are
unable to obtain adequate housing through other conventional means. Lack of adequate housing may include problems
with the present structure, water, electrical, or sewage service systems; heating system, or failure to meet city property standards.
Also taken into consideration are the number of children, ages and genders, compared to the number of bedrooms in the current home.
2.The percentage of your monthly income that you currently spend on housing is considered to determine need.
You will be required to openly and fully discuss your financial situation with a HFH interviewer.
3.You must currently live in Codington County, the covered area of this affiliate.
4.You and your family will be considered if your total income is approximately 25 to 50 percent of the Codington County median
family income using the most currently HUD statistics.

2 $21,000 to $27,000
3 $21,000 to $30,500
4 $21,000 to $34,000
5 $21,000 to $36,500

Housess are built or renovated using as much volunteer labor as possible. The houses are sold to partner families at cost with no down-payment, and are paid for with a no interest mortgage over a 20 or 30 year period. The payments are used to build more homes for other low income families. Habitat for Humanity is NOT a "giveaway" program. The partner families repay the cost of the homes and each family is required to invest "sweat equity" hours in the construction of their own or other homes.
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Watertown Region became one of the more than 1700 U.S. Affiliates of HFH International in February of 1992. It is goverened by a Board of Directors who work diligently and without pay to carry out the many organizational and administrative tasks involved in this non-profit South Dakota Corporation. Many volunteers apply their time, talents and labor to the infinite variety of jobs that are necessary to the seccessful completion of a HFH home. Many churches and civic organizations, as well as hundreds of interested individuals, have donated money, building materials, and food for the workers. The expertise of a number of building contractors have also been made available at no cost.
