Dear Parents of Pack 529,

If you are like us, you came to this pack when a small group of parents did most of the organizing. It was a sweet deal for us until we burned those parents out! It comes as no surprise that this model of leadership is not sustainable and the B.S.A. has long since known this. That is why the suggested model for Pack leadership is a Pack Committee and Den Leadership.

A Pack Committee is a behind-the-scenes group of 6 or more parents that carry out the administration of the Pack while the Cub Master and Den Leaders interact with the boys directly. The Pack Committee consists of a Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and at least 3 sub-committee chaird, each serving a one-year term. Helping the sub-committee chairs is any number of parent volunteers. It's a system that's been used for many years and it works!

When you were a new Tiger-Cub family, if you had learned that your first year was for observing and learning about Pack 529 and that after that you would be counted on to serve would you have said "no" to scouting? If the boys counted on you or your spouse to help organize one event per year (a parade, Predators outing, popcorn sales, etc.) and once in five years for you and your spouse to volunteer on the Pack Committee would you have stepped forward?

We believe that this is a sustainable model for Pack leadership and that if we can present this format to the 2010-2011 Tiger Cub families they will come to Pack 529 like moths to a flame! Families will get to know other families in the Pack as they volunteer for short-term activities. Each family will have an influence on how the Pack grows when they serve on the Pack Committee. And the boys will be the ultimate beneficiaries of a Pack that really works!

If you believe in these ideas, take a look at the Pack Committee details found on our website and fill out the 2010-2011 volunteer form at the August 24th Pack Meeting. We're counting on every family to step up and take an active role in their son's Pack.

A cub scout follows Akela. The cub scout makes a pack go, the pack makes the cub scout grow and the cub scout gives good will!

The leadership and energized parents of Pack 529.
