News - Kay Pearson was elected to the Ruritan National Board of Directors
It is with excitement and enthusiasm that we announce that Kay Pearson was elected to a 3-year term as National Director of the Ruritan Organization at the 2009 National Convention in Myrtle Beach, SC. She was assigned to the Tennessean and Davy Crockett Districts in East TN for 2009. She has been assigned to the Arkansas Opportunity Land District for 2010. She is on the National Growth and Development Committee. Under her leadership as 2008 District Governor, the Cherokee District grew from 17 clubs to 26 clubs with membership growing from 527 to 915 members. Her goal is to help the Ruritan organization grow and be the best ever community service organization.

3.gifWelcome to the Harrison Ruritan Club site...

Our Club Activities One of the first major projects was to solicit subscribers for Eastside Utility District. This project enabled Harrison residents to have clean and pure water at a very reasonable cost. In 1956 the club completed the grading and lighting of a softball field on Harrison Elementary School grounds, and later, bleachers were built by the club. In 1971 a baseball and softball program for boys and girls was organized. The club invested over $30,000 in the program over a five year period. The program was so successful that it was turned over to a separate organization, The Harrison Recreation League. They continue to operate the program successfully today.

A few years ago, the club contributed $15,000 toward the purchase of an ambulance for the Hwy 58 Fire Dept. The County now operates the ambulance service, but the fire department has grown to four stations and is still operated entirely by volunteers. Harrison Ruritan Club raised $10,000 in 2007 to purchase a thermal imaging camera for the Hwy 58 Volunteer Fire Department in memory of Shane Daughetee. The club contributes Rudy Bears to the VFD to give to children they encounter in traumatic situations.

A major undertaking began in 1962 when ground was broken for the club building. The club building was completed mostly by volunteer labor. Harrison Club won Ruritan National's Building Award in 1973.

Club has made financial contributions to Harrison Elementary School, Brown Middle, and Chattanooga Central High Schools. Club has given scholarships to seniors, sponsored delegates to Boys’ & Girl’ State and Freedoms Foundation Leadership Training.

Other major projects consist of Car Shows, Haunted House, annual BBQ, Pancake Breakfasts, Rummage Sales, Coaster Car Rally, Golf Tournament, and several St. Jude’s Hospital Bike-A-Thons. The club has contributed baskets to the needy, purchased clothing for needy, provided closed-caption TV for the deaf, helped pay medical expenses, and made numerous contributions to families whose homes were burned. In 2003-2005 the club sponsored the Hwy 58 Christmas Parade. These are just a few of the many projects completed by the Club.

The Ruritan National Habitat for Humanity project, built a house in Chattanooga, TN which was completed in 2005. Over $50,000 was raised for this project and the Cherokee District contributed over $21,000 to this project plus many hours of labor.

The Harrison Club Open Car Show on May 25, 2008, at the TN Riverpark was a huge success and the proceeds with be used for community service projects in the community. Thanks to the many Ruritans from Harrison, East Hamilton County, and clubs in the Cherokee District for all your help in making this project successful.

A special THANKS to all members contributing to my campaign for National Director. Your help was greatly appreciated. THANKS!! Kay Pearson, 2009 National Director.
