Salvation: Through God's Gift, Jesus
By Terrance Milem Sr.

John 3:16, " For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Man is a sinner and sin has a penalty, which is death. Although God is a just God and must not allow sin to go unpunished, because he loves us he provided us with a way out. Ephesians 2:4 & 5a says,

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins.

The penalty for sin is death, which is separation from God. Since we are all born into sin, we are automatically separated from God. Because of His love God is merciful towards us. 1 Corinthians 13 gives us a description of what love is.

In the King James version the word charity is used in the place of love. The reason for this is that the word charity denotes action. Another word for charity is benevolence. Love is not just about how we feel, it is about how we act. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NIV) says,

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

If we look at this definition of love, anyone who possesses these attributes would gladly give their all for the sake of others, which God did for us.

Now let's look at how His love was manifested as charity. 1 John 4:9 says,

In this was manifested the love of God towards us, because that God sent his only begotten son into the world, that we might live through him.

When we look back at Ephesians 2:4 & 5 we see that God loved us even when we were dead in sins. Here his love is manifested in that he gave us life through Jesus. God saw us in our dead condition and decided to give all that he had in order to give us another shot at life. Not that we deserved another shot, because we didn't. When we think of love as charity we think of giving to someone who is in need. Providing them with something which otherwise they could in no way attain. We can in no way attain salvation on our own because sin separates us from God.

When Adam & Eve were in the garden there were 2 trees in the midst of the garden, the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. They had access to the tree of life and could eat from it freely. When sin entered into man through the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge, we lost access to the tree of life. Jesus said in John 6:48, 50, & 51,

48 I am that bread of life.
50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

The Greek word for bread as it is used here is artos. Artos not only means bread in the literal sense it also is a generic term, which refers to food of any kind. Jesus, the bread of life, has replaced the fruit which Adam & Eve ate freely from the tree of life that we lost access to because of sin. God gave us Jesus so that we could once again have access to life. The question now is how do we get this gift. I will explain how in our next study.
