Phyllis Littlejohn-Harmon, resides in Birmingham, Alabama. She is married to Hamilton alumnus Randolph Harmon and they have three children and five grandchildren. Her sister-in-law is Hamilton ’68 alumna Margaret Harmon Woods. Phyllis’ employer is the University of Alabama where she holds the position as Marketing Manager for the College of Continuing Studies. Phyllis also worked for BellSouth Telecommunications in sales and marketing jobs for twenty-eight years. Phyllis has a B.A. in Marketing from the University of Memphis and a M.B.A. from the University of Alabama. She attends Sixth Avenue Baptist Church and is the president of Phi Iota Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Phyllis spends her spare time working in the yard and enjoying her family.
John Pruitt, residing in Chino, CA,(divorced)-- is a school board member for the Chino Valley Unified School District and this December 2003 was elected as school board president. In November 2003, John was selected to serve on the 17-member policy platform committee for the state of California. John is the grandfather of six year old Chris. His son, Joseph, graduated from college last June with a degree in biology and now is attending optometry school. His daughter, Rosalyn, graduated from U of M with a degree in chemistry, and now is teaching chemistry in Memphis City School. John visited China in 2003 and climbed the Great Wall of China. LaVerne Whitehead Reed, Dr. Reed has distinguished herself as an effective leader in Christian Discipleship, Community Outreach and Education; One of many who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee, and a supporter of Civil Rights. She is an ordained Itinerant Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and serves as Dean of Richard Allen Chapel at Paul Quinn College in Dallas, Texas. Prior to that appointment, Dr. Reed served as Senior Pastor of St. James A.M.E. Church, Denton, Texas. Affirming and embracing her call to ministry in 1991, Dr. Reed enrolled in Brite Divinity School at TCU to study to show herself approved. In 1992 a first and only occurrence for a female in that congregation, Dr Reed was ordained to the Gospel Ministry at Harvey Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas while still a seminarian. Within that same year, she became the first African American female Minister to deliver the Invocation for the Fort Worth City Council. Continuing with her firsts, Dr. Reed was the first African American to serve as Secretary of the Brite Divinity School student Government. Her journey in the A.M.E. Church began in 1993 at Wesley Chapel in Fort Worth, as Associate Pastor. In an unprecedented move in 1994, Bishop John R. Bryant admitted her to the North Texas Annual Conference and ordained her an Itinerant Elder at that same Conference; Another first for this Minister and the North Texas Annual Conference. A native Memphian, and product of the Memphis City and Vocational schools, Dr. Reed relocated to Texas where she earned the Doctorate of Ministry, Master of Divinity, Bachelor of Science, and Associate of Arts degrees in addition to the Diploma of Vocational Nursing and completed further studies at The Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta Georgia. During her tenure at Texas Christian University and Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth, Texas Dr. Reed received the TCU Certificate of Academic Excellence, TCU Outstanding Student Award nomination, and was designated a Benjamin E. Mays Scholar through the Fund for Theological Education, Inc. She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., The NAACP, and the Worthy Matron for Heroines of Jericho Margurite Court 338, P.H.A. Dr. Reed has also been a volunteer Rape Crisis and Career Counselor for the Women’s Center of Tarrant County and a Crisis Intervention hotline counselor. |
