THE BOOKSALE It was a dreary rainy day on Saturday. The weather forecast was for 3 to 5 inches of rain in a 24 hour period. BUT.......It did not keep the book buyers away. More than $300 was collected in 10, 25 and 50 cent or $1 increments. The sale will continue thru Oct 3. So if you missed the Saturday sale, come on down to the library during library hours and see the selection still for sale. A WONDERFUL SURPRISE! The Friends of the Library newsletter was mailed this week. On Friday Sept. 18, one of those Friends walked into the library and handed the Library Director a check for $300 to cover the cost of software for the public computers. Aren't FRIENDS great! THANK YOU! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! 2009 Summer Reading Program ended with a Pizza Party and prizes awarded. A bicycle was the grand prize in the children's program and was awarded to Aliah. An iPOD was the grand prize in the Teen reading program and was awarded to Haley. The Teen program this year was "Express Youself" and was held from 11:30-1:00 on Fridays. The children's theme this year was 'Be Creative at your Library'. Special guests and crafts that were scheduled included Lynn Fox who invites you to walk with him in Davy Crockett's footsteps on Jun 19th. The Book Discussion Group meets on the last Monday of the month at the library. June's meeting was held on the patio. It was a beautiful sunny morning. There was coffee and cookies as well as insight to several current books on the shelf both fiction and non-fiction. See you at the next meeting! $371,500 What does this big number have to do with our library? $371,573.12 is the total amount of tax refunds that were received by area residents who came to the library and allowed VITA volunteers to prepare and file their income tax returns. What other completely free service brings this kind of return to the community? Congratulations, everyone! Another successful VITA year. The mural inthe Children's Area has been completed. In the mural is a replica of the library as well as a 'big' bulletin board. Betty Perry has done an excellent job! WHO WERE THE FIRST VISITORS???? The 4th grade class from Lake City Elementary School that's WHO. They visited the library on Monday May 11. Ninety (90) Children (as well as teachers and parents!). They walked from school to the library. And YES, they all 'fit' into the space. Plans were for four groups with each group being hosted by a library employee telling them about the library: books, computers, DVD's and CD's, how to get a library card and how to use it as well as other interesting information. Each group rotated on every 15 minutes. What a well behaved but enthusiastic group! Then there was the picnic at the ball field. WELCOME Fourth Graders! The library is a fascinating place and can be for you for a long time to come! May 2 - Join Hands Day at the Library It was raining at 10 a.m. when a group met outside the library to refurbish the planters on each side of the library entrance. Raingear consisted of hooded jackets, umbrellas, rainhats and even garbage bags fashioned into ponchos. It was a 'dirty job' but the group was up to the job! New shrubs and flowers are planted. Dish gardens were placed on the rear patio. The weather prohibited the use of electric hedge clippers, so shrubery both on the front and rear of the library will be trimmed as the weather permits. There will be more 'cleaning up' of the grounds around the library in the next few days. There are pictures documenting the work even one of some of the group scrubbing feet, legs, and shoes of the wet dirt at the outside faucet :). After the cleanup, the group enjoyed a 'fast food' lunch from McDonald's provided by Modern Woodman. WANT TO GET YOUR 2 cents WORTH? Friends of the Lake City Library was awarded a Community Enhancement Grant of $1500 by Rep. Les Winningham at Lake City Hall on June 11, 2008. The money was spent to purchase more library cards. These cards have the picture of the library on them. More of the money was spent on genealogy book bindings. The books have be returned from the bindery and what a new look for them. The new binding will lengthen the shelf life of 55 books and other publications. A very wise investment for years to come! Our genealogy section continues to receive numerous visitors. It now has even more research books and programs so you can trace your family back to the earliest members. If you have not visited this area be sure to treat yourself soon! New genealogy books (65) have been added to our collection. They are back from the bindery and are on the shelves. Some small publications were bound together since some of the books are of short length. Binding the books to hardback is an excellent way to lengthen the life of the limited editions.
Downloadable E-books and Audio books are now available to Lake City Library Patrons. Just access www.overdrive.com and follow the instructions. The books are funded by the State of Tennessee and comes to us via the Clinch-Powell Regional Library. There are over 1300 books to download (for a two week period). More are added all the while. If you can't get the book you want to read immediately, just drop down and look over the 50 audio books that are always available. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Do you live out of the area and need genealogical documents from the Anderson County or Campbell County courthouse? You must know the specific record you are looking for and in which county it is located. There is no charge for our volunteer's time, but there is a cost for printing or copying and mailing. Local Authors in the Genealogy Section Marshall McGhee, Gene White, Stephanie Hill, Bonnie Page, Katherine Hoskins, Gloria Fay Burris, John Rice Irwin are some of the local authors whose books are found in the genealogy section. Mrs. Burris has more than 30 volumes available of genealogy of local famiy names. On the Shelf - More genealogy materials have been donated to the library by Stephanie Hill. She is organizing her personal files and they will become available to researchers at the library. Thanks, Stephanie! Linda Slover Lindsey presented the library with her volume of Slover family genealogy. She also gave a notebook of pictures and her research on Medford School. Later, we expect that there will be a collections of pictures on disk from Medford students and teachers. We're looking forward to seeing them. The library has asked for local high school annuals for the genealogy section. Some have already been donated. The group has published a book about the memorial and the 'heroes' listed there. There are pictures and biographical information of the servicemen listed on the monument, dedication program, newspaper clippings, a story of the sinking of a Japanese prisoner of war ship with 1805 Americans aboard, a War Department letter to Clifford R. Friends of the Lake City Library
The 'Friends' group is involved with several library projects. In past years, the Friends had a booth at the Coal Creek Miner's Festival. Handmade crafts were sold, including a commerative of the Miner's Memorial at the Leach Cemetery where many of the miners killed in the Fraterville Mine disaster (1902) are buried. Marshall McGhee, a local author, sold one of his books, "Coal Mining Towns" from the booth donating a portion of the sales to the Friends. We gave away (or sometimes for just a little money) children's books. We distributed flyers for the Children's Summer Reading Program. We talked to parents of young children to be sure the children were registered for the Birth to 5 books project sponsored by Dollywood's Imagination Station, the State of Tennesse and locally (Anderson County) by Oak Ridge Associated Universities. We also had posters announcing coming projects in the genealogy section of the library. Children who stopped by the booth had fun creating a Curious George toy from construction paper.
The Friends have purchased furniture for the patio, a computer table to be used during tax season, paid binding cost for several volumes in the genealogy section, purchased the new magazine rack and the bulletin board for the children's section, funded the purchase of new library cards that have the library picture on the key chain card, paid for events for the Children's Reading program, supplied breakfast for the Chamber of Commerce meeting at the library, held the annual books sale, hosted the annual chili supper, AND the largest effort, funded the Ancestry.com/HeritageQuest.com until other entities began to provide the services. This year's plans have included hosting Chamber of Commerce meeting at the library, hosting an Open House on Lake City Library Day, holding a book sale, sponsoring Children's Summer Reading Program sessions, additional landscaping, fall book sale, and 'Lunch for a Bunch'.
