Lowenstein House Program Description 

Lowenstein House is the first psychosocial rehabilitation facility of its kind in the Memphis and Shelby County area dedicated to providing a day program and a jobs training program for persons diagnosed with mental illness.

Lowenstein House was originally located in the Elias Lowenstein Mansion located at the corner of Jefferson and Manassas in Memphis. The agency relocated to another facility in 1990, but kept the Lowenstein House name and logo.

The mission of Lowenstein House is assist persons with mental health disorders obtain skills that will help them function more productively in the community. This may include learning basic living skills such as budgeting, cooking, learning how to ride the bus or developing job readiness skills such as resume writing and interviewing. Individuals participating in the program are involved in all aspects of the program's operations. They are "Members" of the clubhouse, not clients or patients. Lowenstein House is open Mondays - Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (3:30 p.m. on Fridays). Program members are asked to attend between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

The program has four main training units in which members can participate. They are: Food Services, Clerical/Word Processing, Environmental Services and Support Activities. Members entering the program for the first time will go through an orientation period in which they will spend time in each of the training units. During this time, they can decide which unit best fits their needs. Members' participation in the program in unlimited. If a member is interested in going to work, they can be transferred to the Jobs Training and Placement Unit where Job Coaches will work with them on job placement and follow-up

Purpose

Lowenstein House was designed to help individuals diagnosed with mental illness achieve independence and self-sufficiency through counseling, skills training, job placement, housing assistance, emotional support and guidance.

Target Population

Lowenstein House serves adults, at least 18 years of age and older, who have been diagnosed with mental illness.

Fees

There are no fees to members participating in the program.

Referrals can be made to the program by contacting the Manager of Intake and Statistics or the Program Director at (901) 274-5486. To receive information on the program or a referral form, contact us by phone or e-mail by submitting your information below.

Donations to Lowenstein House are very much needed and appreciated. In addition to monetary contributions, we are always in need of items such as clothing, books and household items for our "Thrift Shop", furnishings for our facility, or holiday gift items for our members.
