Welcome to Boy Scout of America Troop 522

Welcome to Troop 522. The Dotsonville Community Center (DCC) has been our chartering organization since 1996.

Our troop is similar to others in organization and function and we follow the guidelines established by the Boy Scouts of America. Our troop is scout-led with the scouts determining the activities and level of participation. Adult leaders provide guidance to the scouts and the Troop Committee determines general direction and accomplishes many of the administrative requirements.

Troop 522 is active and we try to have at least one activity per month. We average more than 20 camping nights each year. Recurring major activities include a trip to Boxwell Scout resident camp, and Grimes Canoe Base. Other favorites have been Space and Aeronautics Center in Huntsville, AL and Paoli Peaks Ski Resort in Indiana, IL, as well as our latest the Civil War Camp.

The troop has had more than 5 scouts attain the rank of Eagle in the last two years. We encourage all scouts to use that as their goal even though we recognize that only a few will attain it. The adult leaders have a great amount of scouting experience. Several had been scouts in their youth and soon some of our own Eagle scouts shall join the younger scouts in leading them on the Eagle trail.

Troop meetings are each Thursdays from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at the Dotsonville Community Center, which is located at the end of Dotsonville Road. (If you’ve gone to the stop sign at the very end of Dotsonville Road, you will have to turn around and it is the first driveway to your right).

Revised August 19, 2011

Dear parent:

Your son has taken a step toward building a solid future; are you willing to support his growth?

Recently, your son indicated his desire to try his hand at such high-adventure activities as backpacking, hiking, cycling, camping, swimming, canoeing, rock climbing, and other such adventures (see photos located to the left top and bottom to see recent activities/campouts). Our Scout troop will participate in these activities and even more in the coming year, and we would like to invite him to join the Boy Scouts of America.

Scouting has a reputation for helping youth develop self-reliance, strong character, respect for others, good citizenship skills, and physical and mental fitness. For over 100 years, the scouting program has instilled in young men the values and knowledge that they need to become leaders in their communities and in their countries.

Please join our troop any time we meet at 7:00pm on Thursdays at the Dotsonville Community Center (located at the end of Dotsonville Road). You'll get a firsthand look at some of our troop activities, and you can visit with our Scouts and their adult leaders. Take some time and visit the Scoutshop located inside Grandpa's located on Ft. Campbell Blvd. and take some of the posted brochures, and bring any questions or concerns to the meeting.

I look forward to meeting you!

Sincerely,

Scoutmaster, Troop 522

All these trips are coupled with weekend/ weeks get-aways. There these boys learn to pack needed camping items, pop up their own tent, cook their own meals, clean their own dishes, start and maintain their own fire pits, interact with one another in a possitive and meaningful way, to step up and do, and more all under the supervision of adult leaders nearby.

Grimes Canoe Base 2011
This is a fun filled weekend get away! Canoes, kayaks, tents, lifevests, safety briefing, and transportation to and from the water are provided on site! Cost of canoe, kayak, tent, patch, food, gas, misc. (such as ice, throw away camera, development of film, etc.) are shared amongst all attending (individual and troop fundraisers can and should take care of this cost)! The trip our boys usual take is seventeen miles - approximated time to arrival 8 hrs.! MRE lunches have been provided to scouts in the past! They will start the morning with breakfast and finish the evening with dinner! Once canoe/kayaks are on the Buffalo River all the boys are given the wet welcome to cancel fear of flipping! Some more time is given upon entering the water to practise canoeing! Two or three to a canoe, means team work is needed, otherwise you will be going in circles!
 Boxwell Scout Reservation 2011
This summer camp will run Sunday though Saturday! This is the time your son will choose his activities! Upon completion he will earn a patch called a merit badge! Peers and adult volunteer scouters are on site to teach many so called merit badges (motorboating, camping, first aid, just to name a few)! There are over one hundred merit badges! Dinning hall and First Aid station are on site! Tents are provided! Food but not the cost of transportation and additional merit badge fees are included! These depend on the classes and number of scouts taken! Parents you'll want to learn about the needed number of Eagle Scout required merit badges, to keep your son on target for his goal of eagle scout! You can go and have fun, but to earn the rank of eagle scout you must have a set number and the time can get away from you! Remember a scout is to make a min. of ten over nighters!

Mammoth Cave 2011
The boys chose to go to Mammoth cave! This is not a yearly trip for this troop! Due to late commitments and payments made, the four hour tour was no longer available! With this the boys lost the sacked lunch as well! Another package was chosen and an additional substitution is planned (Kentucky down under was discussed)! Again this is a weekend get away for the boys, their fathers, and open to attending other family members!
 Shiloh Trails 2011
We have new found interest in hiking trips! Shiloh will be very educational! This is yet another weekend get away! Start researching now!
