  • SCOUT BOOKS!
All Scouts below 1st Class are expected to have their Scout Books on them at each Troop meeting and outings. We have had ongoing issues with incomplete Merit Badges that we need to stay on top of to ensure our Scouts progress. This is a good habit to enforce to maintain their books and update the information critical to advancement. You will also always need your books if you plan to have either a ScoutMaster conference or Board of Review.

If you are interested in attending other MBUs across the US and some near us also, go to www.Meritbadge.info or use the link in our links section. There are scheduled events plus year long offerings of Merit Badges included in the site that is very useful.

    EAGLE SCOUT PACKET INFO!

We are very proud of our Eagle Scout reputation in Troop 500. Our goal is that every Scout attain Eagle.

BELOW is a great presentation that shows the overall EAGLE SCOUT Process:
Download the EAGLE SCOUT CANDIDATE PRESENTATION Adobe PDF file

The Minute a Boy Scout attains the rank of LIFE SCOUT he can begin to work on his Eagle Project. Completing the Eagle Scout Project is only half of the requirements with earning the required 21 Merit Badges being the other but the Eagle Project is usually the toughest part of the two.

Below is the EAGLE PROJECT WORKBOOK that can be filled in ELECTRONICALLY and SUBMITTED to your EAGLE SCOUT MENTOR for PRIOR APPROVAL before working on any EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT-
Click here to download the 2012 EAGLE SCOUT SERVICE PROJECT WORKBOOK Adobe PDF file

Once the Eagle Project proposal has been seen by your Eagle Scout Mentor and ScoutMaster it will then be approved by the District Advancement Chairman before any work is done on the project.

Once the project is completed and approved by the Unit ScoutMaster the Eagle Scout will complete the EAGLE SCOUT RANK APPLICATION FORM and schedule an EAGLE SCOUT BOARD OF REVIEW from the DISTRICT ADVANCEMENT CHAIRMAN. Below is a copy of the EAGLE SCOUT RANK APPLICATION FORM:
Click here to download the 2012 EAGLE SCOUT RANK FILLABLE APPLICATION FORM MS Word file

One requirement for the EAGLE SCOUT BOARD is to submit a total of 4 EAGLE SCOUT REFERENCES(One is from your parents). These are mailed out and addressed for return directly to SCOUTMASTER JOHN KLOMFAS. MAIL THESE EARLY! SUBMIT MORE THAN 3 to ensure you are not SHORT!! ATTACHED IS THE EAGLE SCOUT REFERENCE FORM:

Click here to download theEAGLE SCOUT REFERENCE FORM Adobe PDF file

IN ADDITION to the references you must also complete the EAGLE PROJECT INFORMATION FORM and submit that form at the Eagle Board. This ensures your information will be available to share with the Council in preparation for the yearly EAGLE SCOUT AWARDS BANQUET you will be invited to later in the year held by the Middle Tennessee Council in Nashville.

    NEW PARENT ORIENTATION PRESENTATION!
If you are a New Parent or a prospective parent thinking about Boy Scouts and Troop 500 this presentation will provide a guide on Boy Scouts and how our Troop is organized.
download our Troop 500 Parent Orientation Presentation Adobe PDF file

Our monthly Troop Committee meetings have lead to some great events such as the Christmas Banquet and assisting in the areas of organizing finance and driving Fundraisers. We are definitly going in the right direction and our Scouts are on the TRAIL OF THE EAGLE.

We have monthly Troop Committee meetings the 2nd Monday of each month that are held during our normal Troop meeting times from 7-8 pm upstairs. We do need more volunteers to stay involved for support. The more people we have involved the better we will be as a Troop in leading the boys. We ask each Committee Member to take some quick online training that will be outlined for each member. Thank you in advance!

    WHY DID WE REORGANIZE?
Because of our increased growth this was needed to ensure proper traking of all areas to include Rank Advancement towards Eagle Scout.
WHAT DO I DO NOW THAT WE ARE IN BOY SCOUTS?
If you are a new parent you are probably have many questions about NOW WHAT? Let me attempt to answer some of your questions:

    1. QUESTION: What is the #1 item my son needs?
ANSWER: Go to the Scout shop at Granpa's and pick up a new Boy Scout Handbook. Be sure to purchase the black cover that protects the book as well since pages will tend to get ripped off immediatly when the books are tossed around by your Scout. The Boy Scout Handbook will be needed extensively thru 1st Class to track and log all of their requirements completed. It's also a guide where they will log in all of their information and dates on completed activities with the Troop as well as Merit badges. Encourage your son to write everything he does in the Troop or outside the Troop by way of any Service to others in his book and log those hours.
NEXT: In Boy Scouts in order to keep the records up to date your Son has to learn to bring his book to the Leaders to update the information into the system. We log Service Hours, Camping Hours, and Rank items completed in the Patrol into the system.

    2. QUESTION: What do I do about his uniform and what do I need to buy?
ANSWER: We will give you the Scout Rank and all ranks afterwards to sew on his Uniform. You can sew this or I suggest you put his first ranks in a holder versus sewing since in their early years they will move fast in rank up to First Class. We will also give you the Tabs you need to put on their uniform if you did not already receive them during Crossover into the Troop.
    3. QUESTION: What about Camping Gear? Do I need to go out and buy a Tent immediatly? ANSWER: NO, don't go out and buy a lot of expensive gear. Buy it as you need it and ask advice from many of us already in Scouting on where to get the gear you are after. Camping gear is great to give on Birthdays and Christmas going forward to your Scout for larger items. A great site we use a lot for Sleeping bags and other gear is www.Campmor.com another site is www.REI.com We also have a lot of supplies to loan out in the Troop as well such as Backpacks and tents so hold off on making a big investment and buying all the gear until you need it.
    4. QUESTION: SO, what do the parents do in Scouting?
ANSWER: We need you to help out when and where you can as a Troop Committee member. Just as in the pack ,if we have more help we can do more things more effectively. Each month during the 2nd Monday we have a Troop committee meeting held during the Troop meeting from 7-8 pm that you should plan on attending. Here you can see the full effect of running the Troop and the planning that goes on for supporting the actitivities and needs of the Unit.
    5. QUESTION: I have noticed the Troop is quite a bit different than the Pack and the Boys are running around sometimes? Is that normal?
ANSWER: YES! Unlike Cub Scout which is Leader/Adult ran Boy Scouts is ran by the Boys. In fact, it's the Senior Parol Leader and the Patrol Leaders who run their own Patrols who we want to keep in charge. Following opening each meeting, the Senior Parol Leader is given the task(s) of the evening. The Senior Patrol leader will then pass this on to each Patrol present for action. Aside from the weekly tasks you should know that there are tons of other activities that go on each Monday such as: Scouts taking their books to leaders to update their information into the computer, Assistant ScoutMasters or Patrol Leaders training Scouts one-on-one on Rank requirements, Scouts bringing in Merit Badge completion items for review by the Merit Badge Counselor, Leader meetings to determine planning for future events, Payment of yearly fees by each Scout, Scouts working on individual Position duties (Quartermaster/Scribe/Librarian etc..)

AS YOU CAN SEE, there is a lot to do in a Troop and while it may seem like Chaos, it's organized chaos. Unlike Cub Scout they are not waiting on Adults to lead them each step of the way (but we are there of course). If we are not planning for an event we are following up and focusing on Rank and Skill requirements needed for each Scout. Each Patrol has an Assistant Scoutmaster assigned (an ASM we call it). Their job is to oversee and assist the Parol Leader to ensure he is doing his job and to watch out over the needs of the Patrol and spur them on if necessary.

If you have more questions or concerns just email me or ask. If you would like to to volunteer to be a Committee member in Troop 500 please email or contact me below. Thank you.

    ORDER OF THE ARROW INFO!

The Order of the Arrow's Purpose is to recognize those campers – Scouts and Scouters – who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives and by such recognition cause other campers to conduct themselves in such manner as to warrant recognition.
To develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit.
To promote Scout camping, which reaches its greatest effectiveness as a part of the unit’s camping program, both year-round and in the summer camp, as directed by the camping committee of the council.
To crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpo e of leadership in cheerful service to others.
In order to be a member of the Order of the Arrow you first have to be CALLED OUT by your Troop. This also counts for Adults as well as Scouts. Scouts must be 1st Class in Rank at a minimum and participate actively in the Troop to be considered for nomination. Adults must also participate actively to be nominated. There is no set number of Scouts/Adults who may be nominated. ALL nominated will then go through the OA ORDEAL which is comprised of a weekend campout in BoxWell. ORDEALS are held 2 times per year. Once ORDEAL is passed then they are official members of the Order of the Arrow.
If you want more info on OA please see our Troop 500 OA REPRESENTATIVE.
...For more information about the Order of the Arrow, visit the National Order of the Arrow website Link in the Links Section.
