CONGRATULATIONS 2008 ACT-SO GOLD MEDALLISTS
The San Antonio Local ACT-SO competition was held on Saturday April 5th, 2008 from 9:00am-2:00pm at St. Philip's College. thirty eight talented high school students participated in fourteen categories in humanities, visual and performing arts. ACT-SO gold medalist alumni included Konise Millender, film-making teacher at North East School for the Performing Arts, and Ashley Dixon, recording artist and ACT-SO mentor. The Award ceremony was held on April 12th at the NAACP Youth Image Awards. Eight students received gold medals; Britany Mosley-Poetry, Breeann Ashley - Dance, John Miller - Music Instrumental Classical, Christopher Watkins - Music Vocal Classical and Contemporary, Jamelia Walker - Oratory, Benjamin Bryant and Nisa Sanders -Painting, and Joselyn Baker - Photography. Receiving silver medals were; Kristen Burton, Kyron Walker, Maria Vaughn, Nisa Sanders and Margaret Ross-Martin. Bronze medallists included; Mayzella House, Lauren Smith, Monica Delgado and Keturah Miller. The other students received certificates of recognition from Ruth Jones McClendon, State Representative, District 20.

ACT-SO recognizes that while gold, silver and bronze medals are effective incentives to excellence, awards are not the primary goal. Rather, our vision centers around the mobilization of adults in our comunities for the continous promotion of academic and artistic excellence among African American students. We urge all high schools to reach out and recruit educators and professionals to serve as year long instructors, coaches, mentors and most importantly role models for our youth in all of our ACT-SO categories.

Statistics show that students who participate in the NAACP ACT-SO Enrichment program not only enhance their artistic abilities but go on to pursue higher levels of education in their chosen fields. Many can also attest to the fact that the NAACP ACT-SO program was the basis for their foundation and success. Turning dreams into realities by taking a divine gift or inspiration and fully exploring life's opportunities is what ACT-SO is all about.
