WHAT IS ALTRUSA?

Altrusa is an international, volunteer, service organization of business, professional and civic minded leaders, dedicated to improving their communities by personal service. Through their local Altrusa Clubs, members unite their varied talents in service to others, achieving as a group what individuals cannot do alone.

Altrusa Clubs develop and fund specific service projects to meet community needs. Altrusa is recognized nationally and internationally for the significant contributions of its clubs and members.

WHAT CAN ALTRUSA OFFER YOU?

  • Lasting friendships and a spirit of fellowship
  • An opportunity to use your time and talent to enrich the lives of others
  • A unique opportunity to work with local civic and volunteer groups on service projects of lasting benefit
  • Personal contacts that evolve when civic minded people meet and work together toward common goals
  • A forum for exchanging ideas about your community and the world
  • The satisfaction that comes from being involved in activities that will make your community a better place to live
  • Stimulating programs and speakers that broaden your knowledge on scores of subjects

Altrusa offers a unique opportunity to make your community a better place to live.

HOW ALTRUSA WORKS FOR YOU

Altrusa Clubs are organized into geographic Districts, each with its own governing body and offering annual conferences, workshops and leadership training seminars for all members.

Altrusa International unites its more than 500 clubs in a common goal of community service. The local club was organized on October 12, 1964, and chartered in February, 1966. Each club has its own board of directors, a strong committee system and regular meetings, allowing every member to become personally involved in club projects and decisions.

As a member, you will be placed on one of four committees: Service, Communications, Finance, or Membership. Input from new members is welcomed! Each person brings their unique talents to the club to help plan the programs and projects at the beginning of the club year, which begins in June.

The Committee chairperson communicates with his or her members about the programs and meals of which they are in charge. Each committee is responsible for about 2 or 3 programs throughout the year. Being involved can give you satisfaction and often a deep respect for men and women who have been role models in Altrusa.

ALTRUSA’S TRADITION

Altrusa was founded in April, 1917, in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.A., as the “Altrusa Institute” for business and professional women. Under the leadership of Mamie L. Bass, later to be the association’s first president, Altrusa became the “first” national service organization for women committed to a philosophy of service and personal achievement. In 1987, Altrusa opened its membership to men. Membership in Altrusa club is by invitation only.

The local Club meets twice monthly:
Business meeting, 2nd Thursday of each month at noon
Program meeting, 4th Thursday of each month
Unless otherwise announced, all meetings are held at the Palestine Senior Activity Center, 200 N. Church, Palestine, Texas

LOCAL CLUB PROGRAMS

The local Club has various fund-raising programs whereby it pays for its community projects. The major fund-raiser is a chicken/spaghetti luncheon held every February. Other fund-raisers are a white elephant auction in conjunction with its International Dinner in October; its rummage sale in August; and its talent auction each April.

Among the local community projects which have been/and/or currently funded by the Club are:
