The Alvord Public Library recently completed two grant projects this past fiscal year (FY2005 9/1/2004 to 8/31/2005).

Alvord Historic Records Project

The Alvord Public Library collaborated with the University of North Texas to digitize some of Alvord's historic documents for inclusion on The Portal to Texas History website hosted by them. The project was funded by The Tocker Foundation. The following items encompassing over 1600 pages were part of the project:

  • Incorporation Papers of Alvord
  • J.R. Rhyne's Hardware Store Receipts
  • Minutes of the Alvord City Council, 1888-1908
  • Ledger of the Church of Christ at Alvord, Texas, 1904-1916
  • Resolution by City of Alvord council to install waterworks
  • City of Alvord Ordinances, early 1900s
  • Mayor's Criminal Docket, 1893-1924
  • City of Alvord Law Enforcement Documents
  • 1920-21 Tax Roll
  • Texas Power and Light Company Documents
  • Union Hill Baptist Church Record Books, 1877-1950
  • Mary Howard's "yellow pages" History of Audubon
The Alvord Public Library wishes to say Thank You to everybody who contributed to the project by loaning us materials to digitize. This project would not have been possible without your cooperation and contribution.

Alvord Newspapers Project

The Alvord Public Library with the cooperation of the Alvord Gazette had more of the old Alvord newspapers microfilmed. The project was funded through the Loan Star Libraries Grant. The Alvord Gazette loaned the oldest of their newspapers and those newspapers that the Alvord Public Library did not have a duplicate copy of it for microfilming. The microfilming was done by Southwest Micropublishing, Inc in El Paso, Texas. The result was four more rolls of microfilm to add to the other eight rolls of microfilmed newspapers that the Alvord Public Library had previously had done through the same grant two years ago. In this grant round, there was a total of 3,835 pages microfilmed, and in the previous grant, there was a total of 4,411 pages microfilmed. To date, there is grand total of 8,246 pages of Alvord newspapers on microfilm at the library. Most importantly the oldest known newspapers have been preserved in this alternate format before they were totally lost. The oldest newspapers available are from 1922. The Alvord Public Library greatly thanks the Alvord Gazette for their cooperation in getting the newspapers microfilmed. There are still several more recent years that need to be microfilmed, and the library plans on continuing to work toward the goal of having them all converted to microfilm. We also wish to thank the Nocona Public Library for their recent donation of newer model Microfilm Reader-Printer to us. This has replaced our older model.

1924-29 Alvord Tax Rolls and 1920 & 1930 U.S. Census

The Alvord Public Library lent the 1924-29 city tax rolls to Sue Tackel and LaDarla Keith, of the Wise County Heritage Musuem and webmasters of the Wise County US Genweb page, for use while they were working on creating an index for Alvord to the 1920 and 1930 US Census. When they returned it, they brought with them 3 copies of the book they created and donated them to the library. The book is entitled Alvord Township City Tax Rolls 1924-1929, 1920 and 1930 Census Extracts and Combined Index. They included with the books a CD-ROM of the digitized images for the City Tax Roll book. The Alvord Public Library greatly thanks these ladies for their generous contribution and their hard work they do on behalf of Wise County Heritage Museum and the US genweb page for Wise County.
