Dr. Merrell (KISD Superintendent), John P. Irish, and Mrs. Whitbeck (SLHS Principal)

This is my 10th year in Katy ISD - I am excited about this school year, where I will be at Seven Lakes High School to teach AP U.S. History and coach Academic Decathlon / Octathlon and the UIL Social Studies Team. Last year was a very successful and enjoyable year, I am looking forward to an even better year this year. We have some high expectations for our program this year!

I graduated from Southern Methodist University - in Big D (Go Stangs!) with a B.A. in Political Science and Philosophy, I received a M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Arkansas, and then spent time working on my Ph.D. at the University of Nebraska. I hope to some day finish my Ph.D., but at the moment I am enjoying teaching in Katy.

I serve as a Faculty Consultant and AP U.S. History Reader for the College Board and co-wrote the ancillary materials to the 13/e of the AP US History textbook - The American Pageant and the 7/e of The American Pageant - Brief Edition published by Houghton-Mifflin. I just published a curriculum unit for the Center for Learning on Edward Bellamy's novel - Looking Backward and I am currently on the writing team that is updating the Advanced Placement U.S. History Workbooks (3 volumes) for the Center for Learning. The other writing project I am working on is an anthology on American Philosophical and Intellectual Thought.

During the summer I teach Summer Institutes for the College Board, this summer I will be at SMU, UTEP, and TCU - I enjoy watching Dallas sports teams, reading the classics (Mark Twain and Ambrose Bierce are my favorite American writers), watching Abbott and Costello movies, and hanging with my two cats - Eponine and Antigone. I collect Presidential Bobble Heads and my favorite color is blue. My wife, Elizabeth, teaches AP U.S. History AND coaches the Decathlon team (and UIL Social Studies) at James E. Taylor High School. :o)

Antigone: "What did I do with that copy of Twain's The Mysterious Stranger, ah yes, here it is."

Eponine: "I sure am ready for a nap - it's tough being a cat."
