Your Red Hat Fillies Queen and Webmaster, Sheila J., has been re-introduced to an old work from the 1960's. Remember Travels With Charlie, in Search of America by John Steinbeck? I had forgotten how good this story is and how many memorable lines and apt reflections on life it has. As you may know, it's a true accounting of Steinbeck's travels across the United States in a pick up truck accompanied by his dog, Charlie. The recounting of his travels takes me back to my own ramblings with my husband across the Western U.S. in a pick up truck - sans a dog. I literally had to dust this one off and suffer through some major yellowing of pages in the old paperback which could be purchased in the '60's for $0.75. I recommend it.
I also recommend two novels by Khaled Hosseini - his much touted The Kite Runner and his latest A Thousand Splendid Suns . Both novels are set in Afghanistan against the backdrop of war and political events there in the last 30 years. Both have very memorable characters that stay in your mind and haunt you. The Kite Runner has currently been made into a movie and is said to be very intense. I would recommend both books because, once you pick either one up, you will not be able to put it down.
