WELCOME to our latest web page, Fillies Fun , that is designed to feature our Members Only and help us get to know each other a little better. As the name implies, it is meant to be a fun page with a touch of frivolity. The information given about each Member will probably grow as time goes by. Please let me have your suggestions on how to make this an ever more interesting and informative page. Let's have fun and get to know our Fillies Members better!
Bernice B.
Duchess of Treats
Our former high school Ping Pong champion, Bernice B., enjoys reading books by Taylor Caldwell, Ann Rand and Harlan Coben. She likes shopping with her daughters, crossword puzzles, reading and listening to jazz. Her favorite movies are Chicago and Friendly Persuasion. Bernice is a grandmother and her favorite year was the year that her first grandchild was born. She enjoys French and American food and her favorite TV shows are Amazing Race, Two and a Half Men and David Letterman. Her outlook on life is "Do Unto Others." Good advice from the Bible.
Trish D.
Princess of Mysteries
Trish D. spent her early years near Little Rock, Arkansas and Lincoln, Nebraska. She was born in Benton, Arkansas just south of Little Rock. Trish likes to do volunteer work and while living in Arkadelphia, Ark. took blood from college students for the local blood drive. Trish's best year was 1953 when she gave birth to her son whom she describes as the most important person in her life. She enjoys Chinese and Mexican food, reading, and walking. When she watches TV, she enjoys The Closer, CSI Miami and Lost. Her favorite movie is Casablanca - one that a lot of us enjoy! Her taste in music goes toward the Oldies, Jazz and some Classical. Her favorite authors and works by them are: Iris Johansen's Firestorm and Body of Lies, Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas Series and Nora Robert's novels entitled Blue Smoke and Northern Lights. Trish's favorite Multi-Chapter trip was to see the Hindu Temple in Stafford, TX and she would like to see us take more trips to the outlet stores. She would like to see the Fillies go on a picnic and tour gardens in the area. Great Ideas!! Trish believes in being the best person she can be by being "honest, forthright, forgiving and being considerate of other people's feelings."
Kathy E.
Princess of Parliament
Our Fillies Member, Kathy E., is a lady who enjoys Country Music - her favorite artists being Garth Brooks, George Strait and Brooks and Dunn. She enjoys seafood "American, not Sushi." When Kathy watches TV, she enjoys Desperate Housewives , Dancing With the Stars , and I Love Lucy For reading she turns to novels by Danielle Steele and J.A. Jance. Her favorite movie of all time is Gone With the Wind , a true classic that we probably all love! In her spare time, Kathy likes to quilt, read, and watch TV. Her favorite Multi-Chapter trip was our trek to Galveston where we enjoyed High Tea at the Tremont and shopping on the Strand. I remember that Kathy bought a wonderful hat there at a great price (the one she's wearing in the photo!) Her approach to life is "You Only Go Around Once, So Enjoy It While You Can." Alright!! Kathy has submitted three scrumptious sounding recipes that should be on our recipe page soon.
Shirley M.
Lady of Pharmacy
Shirley M. loves living in Texas, but grew up in Rhode Island, and misses those Indian Summers from her childhood. Her favorite cuisine is English and I believe Shirley told me that she has family ties to Canada. We are a diverse group and that fact helps make us more interesting! Shirley's favorite years were 1958, 1961, and 1963 when her children were born. In her spare time, she serves as hospital Lay Chaplain. She is a pharmacist with many connections to the medical community. She also enjoys doing counted cross stitch and reading historical novels. For music she likes "Old Timers" and some Classical. Her taste in TV runs toward sports - basketball and baseball games and all varieties of CSI. Shirley's work and volunteer schedules sometimes prevent her from participating in our Multi-Chapter trips, but we hope to see her there when possible. Her philosophy of life has to do with appreciating the present... "each day is to be enjoyed and savored - tomorrow never disappears - there's no guarantee, however, that you'll see it! Children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are a gift to be enjoyed and loved." And yes, Shirley is a great grandmother. Isn't that wonderful?
Sue S.
Royal Countess of Cruising
Our Fillies Member, Sue S., is the person to consult if you have questions about travel - because she is a travel agent and has been just about everywhere. I believe all of this fascination with travel started in 1980 when Sue took her first trip to Europe and "figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up." In her leisure time, Sue enjoys traveling, reading and "just chillin' out," and watching anything on the travel channel. She also enjoys watching Boston Legal . Don't we all?? For music, Sue favors the Oldies - "A Little Bit of Country, A Little Bit of Rock & Roll." Her favorite authors and works by them are Amy Tan's Bonesetter's Daughter and Rosamunde Pilcher's Shell Seekers. Sue's two favorite movies are From the Terrance and Imitation of Life. She favors French and Thai Cuisine and her favorite Multi-Chapter trip was to the Herb Gardens in Round Top, TX. Her suggestions for future trips are the Historical Home Tour in Galveston for next year on the first Saturday in May, 2008 and the April 25th, 2008, 10th Anniversary Founders Day Luncheon. Sue would also like to see The Fillies take a shopping trip to Harwin and to see the movie Hairspray which opens July 20th. Her philosophical take on life is that "Life is a Banquet and Most People are Starving to Death." Food for thought indeed! Did you know that Sue is addicted to Sudoku?! Well if that's her worst addiction, I guess we can live with it. She has contributed three recipes for our recipe page - one of them entitled "Impossible Pie." They all sound wonderful. Sue, along with Donna G. of the Blazing Paddles, organized the April, 2007, Red Hat Cruise to the Western Caribbean that was so enjoyable.
JoAnn S.
Princess of Angels
JoAnn S. was once a volunteer fireman (firewoman?) when she lived in a small town in Kentucky. There might be some interesting stories to follow up on here! She was born in Gary, Indiana and spent time in Hebron, Indiana. She is a Texan now who enjoys watching movies, spending time with family, and praying. Her favorite music is Country/Western, Easy Listening and Jazz. When watching TV, she enjoys CSI: Las Vegas, ER and Criminal Minds. She likes Italian and Chinese food and knows a lot about most of the restaurants in town. JoAnn's suggestions for the Fillies are to go on a picnic, tour a Japanese garden and visit Member's homes. We now have two requests for picnics - maybe it's time to pack the baskets! For Multi-Chapter activities, JoAnn favors shopping at the outlet stores and she enjoyed the Red Hat Cruise to the Western Caribbean in April, 2007, as well as our visit to the Hindu Temple in Stafford, TX. Her favorite author and work is In the Meantime by Iyanla Vanzant and her favorite movie of all time is Love Story. JoAnn's description of a good way to approach life is to "Live and Let Live, Forgive and Forget and Love Everyone!" Her favorite year was 1987 when two of her grandchildren, Christopher and Casey, were born. Most of us have this in common - love for our grandchildren.
Ruth B.
Princess of Cruising
Ruth B. is one of our newer members and we all enjoy having her in the group. Ruth is also a member of The Garnet Gals so she is truly an active Red Hatter. She and her husband Bill travel quite a bit around town so she is a wealth of information for our upcoming excursions. She and Bill also cruise quite a bit when they have the chance. One of their recent cruises was to Hawaii with some of the other Garnet Gals. When Ruth has leisure time she enjoys reading, watching television, and crocheting. Her favorite shows are Grey's Anatomy, ER, and The Young and the Restless, (I'm hooked on this one myself.) Ruth's best year was 2007 when she took two cruises, traveled to Missouri and Arkansas and made two trips to West Virginia. I told you she liked to be on the move. Ruth's tastes in music vary widely with her love of the Big Band sound contrasted with Rod Stewart, Neil Diamond and George Strait. Her favorite authors are Nora Roberts, Sandra Brown and Danielle Steel. Ruth's favorite movie, along with several of our other Fillies members, is Gone With the Wind . Her favorite type of food is Italian. Suggestions from Ruth for future Multi-Chapter trips are: a shopping trip to the new mall on 290 (we're doing that in October!) and going to see plays at the Opry House in Galveston. Ruth has two children and three grandchildren and her philosophy toward life is encompassed by the following: "Live each day as it were the last and enjoy life to the fullest." Ruth is certainly a valued addition to our Fillies group.
Sandra W.
Queen Bee
Sandra W. and I are Co-Queens of The Red Hat Fillies and we really love how this is working out. Twice the fun and half the work! We love our "jobs" - but that's because we have such a great Red Hat group. Our Red Hat Fillies are Fabulous and we Rock!! But enough - let's talk about Sandra. Sandra is one of those relatively rare individuals - a native Texan who has lived in Houston over 50 years. She has been married 45 years. I think this fact alone is a notable accomplishment. Her daughter, Kendra C., is the lovely Pink Hatter in our group. Sandra was born in Teague, Texas in Freestone County. Her family actually lived in Fairfield, TX, (South of Dallas) at the time of her birth, but Fairfield had no hospital and had a population of less than 2,000. Sandra loved living in a small town when she was a child where everyone knew each other and what everyone else was doing. She moved to the Big City in 1954 and currently enjoys reading, visiting and having lunch with friends, and watching TV. When she watches TV she likes to watch Boston Legal , Grey's Anatomy, and the Animal and Discovery Channels. Her favorite type of food is Seafood. She enjoys all the Mary Higgins Clark books and loves reading all kinds of mysteries. For music she listens to Kenny G. and Celine Dion and likes some Country - Dolly and Willy. Sandra still likes The Sound of Music as her favorite movie. Her best liked Multi-Chapter trip was our tour of the Painted Churches in Schulenburg, TX. We have Sandra to thank for this suggestion, by the way. It was a successful trip that we may repeat. Her suggestions for future Multi-Chapter trips include tours of the bluebonnets and wildflowers of Texas, Ray Miller's tour and touring the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin. (We plan to do the Lady Bird Johnson Center in April, 2008). For our "Just for Fillies" events Sandra would like for us to meet in different Fillies homes for a fun night, try a Saturday Brunch and try to get 12 Fillies together occasionally for a game of Bunco in the evening. I think we're going to have our first Bunco evening early next year in JoAnn's and Trish's recreation area. Sandra's approach to life is to be "easy going, accept things as they are, enjoy life and all it has to offer. Like people and enjoy being with friends and family." Sandra has submitted three more recipes to add to our recipe page, and like the ones before, they sound delicious.
