We sadly bid farewell to these great key woman educators. They will be dearly missed.

Miss Clara G. Utley, a Beta Pi Chapter 11-year member, entered eternal rest on January 1, 2012. Clara was born in Benavides, TX on August 12, 1942 to Santiago and Rita Saenz Utley. She enjoyed photography, journalism, and genealogy. She spent time documenting family history and events. She was Editor of CDA Court #2012 Newsletter. Ms. Utley retired in 2002 after 35 years in Education. Ms. Utley was a member of the American Federation of Teachers, Tri-County Retired Teachers Association, Texas Retired Teachers Association, Duval County Historical Commission, and Spohn Hospital -Alice Volunteers. Ms. Utley also volunteered at R.E.A.L. Center for the Elderly in Benavides, TX. She was called "TEACHER" by the many hundreds of students whose lives she touched throughout her career.

Miss Modesta Pena,a member of Beta Pi for 51 years passed away on June 22,2010, at a Corpus Christi hospital. Through the years Modesta had served in numerous chapter and state committees and offices. She was chapter president in 1976-78, and state recording secretary during the 1993-94 biennium. Modesta was a presenter at area workshops since 1972. Her brilliant work and dedication earned her an invitation to become Area V Coordinator from 1989-91. She was the recipient of the chapter and state Achievement Awards in 1985 and 1995 respectively. Ms. Pena was also active in community projects and organizations. Several of the Beta Pi members were her students at San Diego High School where she taught Jr. and Sr. English. Modesta was a mentor to chapter presidents, committee chairmen, and individual members. She was a true lady respected and loved by all. She was memorialized at the Celebration of Life and Remembrance ceremony at the 82nd Annual Texas State Organization Convention in McAllen on June 25, 2011.
Although her presence will be missed, her spirit will live on in our Society activites and in our hearts forever.
