ABOUT CHAPEAUX ROUGES RUBY BUTTERFLIES

The Chapeaux Rouges Denton Chapter of the Red Hat Society was formed on May 29, 2003, when Queen Mother Sue greeted 17 friends at an Italian restaurant for lunch and invited them to become part of the Red Hat Society, sharing with them the Red Hat Society mission of greeting middle age with verve, humor, and elan. Royal titles were bestowed, and fun and laughter filled the room.

We will celebrate our 6th anniversary as a chapter of the Red Hat Society in May and now have 20 vibrant, wonderful royal ladies in our chapter, including three ladies-in-waiting who wear lavender and a pink hat(because they are under 50). We meet once a month on the third Monday at noon for lunch at various restaurants in the area. We also plan extra group activities for those who are interested in getting together more often. We are located in Denton, Texas in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex. We added "Ruby Butterflies" to our name and are now Chapeaux Rouges of Denton Ruby Butterflies.

We are grateful to Sue Ellen Cooper, Exalted Queen Mother of the Red Hat Society, and her friends for wearing those first red hats to tea in April 1998, resulting in the birth of the Red Hat Society. Ten years later there are about thirty thousand chapters in the Untied States and 25 foreign countries. Current Red Hat Society information is available at www.redhatsociety.com.

HELPFUL INFORMATION FROM THE OFFICIAL RED HAT SOCIETY QUEEN'S HANDBOOK 2005
REGALIA
Those 50 and over must wear purple clothing and a red hat. Those under 50, fondly referred to as Pink Hatters, wear lavender clothing with pink hats. This is all that is absolutely rquired in the way of a "uniform" (although we never call it that). Your entire outfit from head to toes does not have to be purple, or in the case of Pink Hatters, lavender, but the more color the better, and that includes shoes!
TITLES
In the spirit of play, every Red Hatter is encouraged to dream up a title for herself. Royal titles are particularly encouraged (i.e. Empress, Baroness, Lady, Duchess), but titles other than the Queen's are fine too (i.e. Hysterian, Red Snapper, Mistress of Anxiety, etc.). Perhaps a title will be chosen that refers to a particular hobby or interest, such as "Baroness of Buttons" or "Lady Runamuck". A playful title can be the first step toward personal liberation and self-permission to play.

BIRTHDAY SUITS (no, not that kind)
A Red Hatter gains special attention by wearing the Red Hat colors in a unique way during her birthday month. She wears a red outfit with a purple hat. We call this tradition "Au Contraire" (French for "to the contrary"). Why do we do this? Because we feel like it and because we can. We are always on the lookout for ways to make life fun.
CHARITIES
If an individual chapter wishes to participate in charitable events, we encourage them to do so in their chapter name. The RHS as a whole does not see itself as an appropriate forum for fund raising. The RHS is a play group for women -- we're into FUNraising, not fund-raising.
CHAPTER OUTINGS
The task of planning events should not fall on the Queen alone. The easiest way to arrange events is to have each member pick a month and assume responsibility for planning the time and place and notifying fellow members by invitation, phone, or e-mail. Members are encouraged to mind their manners and RSVP in a timely manner. If a member decides to plan a meal at a certain restaurant, she will be in charge of making reservations (hence the importance of the RSVP).

Although RHS chapters often prefer to make public appearances, it is a good idea to ocasionally plan a potluck, or perhaps a pajama breakfast, at someone's home. This can serve the purpose of deepening friendships and discussing ideas and philosophies regarding the future of the chapter and keeping everyone in close touch.

Besides tea and parades, Red Hatters have been known to stomp grapes at a winery, tour bread factories, host hat-making parties and perform for community groups. Get-togethers can last for one hour or an entire weekend, and they don't have to cost a cent.

  BIRTHDAYS
It's your birthday! Wear red if you want to, and a purple hat too,
'Cause you've reached that age where you're the boss of you!
