Grief Support After the Death of a Child

The mission of The Compassionate Friends is to assist families toward the positive resolution of grief following the death of a child of any age and to provide information to help others be supportive.

The Compassionate Friends is a national nonprofit, self-help support organization that offers friendship, understanding, and hope to bereaved parents, grandparents and siblings. There is no religious affiliation and there are no membership dues or fees.

The secret of TCF's success is simple: As seasoned grievers reach out to the newly bereaved, energy that has been directed inward begins to flow outward and both are helped to heal. The vision of The Compassionate Friends is that everyone who needs us will find us and everyone who finds us will be helped.

The Alamo Area Chapter of The Compassionate Friends in San Antonio, Texas, welcomes you to our next meeting. Please contact us by email below - we would like to hear from you.

FOR A PARENT ON THE DEATH OF A CHILD

No one knows the wonder
Your child awoke in you,
Your heart a perfect cradle
To hold its presence.
Inside and outside became one
As new waves of love
Kept surprising your soul.

Now you sit bereft
Inside a nightmare,
Your eyes numbed
By the sight of a grave
No parent should ever see.

You will wear this absence
Like a secret locket,
Always wondering why
Such a new soul
Was taken home so soon.

Let the silent tears flow
And when your eyes clear
Perhaps you will glimpse
How your eternal child
Has become the unseen angel
Who parents your heart
And persuades the moon
To send new gifts ashore.

We Remember Our Children
At every meeting of The Compassionate Friends, we remember our children who have died. And during the month of a child's birthday, they are honored in a special way as parents bring pictures and special items of remembrances to place at the candle on the Birthday Table.

At Compassionate Friends Meetings
At our monthly gatherings, we can talk about our children and know that others listen with the ear of their hearts and understand in the well of their own experience. Or we can sit in silence while our souls grieve together. Through the process of journeying together in grief, we learn, in time, to live and to love again. As is so often heard at The Compassionate Friends, "We need not walk alone."
  Journey With One Another
Sometimes compassion draws us to journey with one another down an unmarked road. The little boy was so excited about going to Grandma's house. I asked him, "Where is Grandma's house?" He told me how to get there: first you go down a long straight road, then down a bumpy road, and then down a really curvy road, and then you're there. With Compassionate Friends, we walk with each other along life's crooked and bumpy roads.
