Grow Bag Item of the Month: Hygeine Items
(shampoo/baby shampoo, soaps/baby wash, lotions, dental items)

Cost: Free to FRUA Members that bring Grow Bag Item; otherwise $5/family for FRUA members, $10/family for nonmembers.

This is a cultural night out for parents and adults. Please, no children under 18. There is NO BABYSITTING provided for this event.

Dr. Charles Sullivan, Professor of History at UD presents this movie since it is an epic film on Russian resilience as well as the benchmark for modern cinemaphotograhy and editing.

First, Who is Alexander Nevsky?

Alexander Nevsky (1220-1263) Prince of Novgorod in 1236-1251. Grand Prince of Vladimir since 1252. Yaroslav II's son. Secured the west frontiers of Russia in the result of victorious battles with Sweden (Battle on Neva, 1240) and Teutonic Knights (battle of Ice of Lake Chudskoe called "Ledovoe Poboishche" 1242). Due to his clever policy he reduced the Tatar-Mongol occupation.

So what's the big deal about this film?

Sergei Eisenstein drew on history, Russian folk narratives, and the techniques of Walt Disney to create this broadly painted epic of Russian resilience. This story of Teutonic knights vanquished by Prince Alexander Nevsky's tactical brilliance resonated deeply with a Soviet Union concerned with the rise of Nazi Germany. Widely imitated-most notably by Laurence Olivier's Battle of Agincourt re-creation for Henry V -the Battle on the Ice scene remains one of the most famous audio-visual experiments in film history, perfectly blending action with the rousing score of Sergei Prokofiev.
