THINKING EXEMPLARY! A word from our new Principal, Mrs. Pollock. ![]() Mrs. Pollock I am delighted to be joining Garden Oaks Elementary and look forward to a wonderful year ahead! I am coming to Garden Oaks after spending the last four years at Park Place Elementary in HISD where I worked as an Assistant Principal. While there, I led the choir, the Boy Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack and coached the students in Theater Arts and Debate competitions. I also tutored students in Math, Reading and Science. I was instrumental in developing our school garden. I was active in the area civic clubs and the East End Chamber of Commerce. My 24 years of experience in education include serving as a private school principal, a classroom teacher, a social worker for students with emotional disturbances and travel as a national consultant. My husband is also a principal in HISD and we share a passion for serving the students and families of HISD to ensure equity and excellence in education. We have a blended family and together, we share 5 grown children ages 29, 27, 25, 22, and 21. Jessica (the oldest) and her husband Steve gave us our first grandbaby on Sept 1, 2007. Ian is a delight to us! Our only "kids" at home are our dogs, Jack and Coby (both rescue animals)! In my "free" time (every Monday night from 6 - 10pm) I sing with the Houston Choral Showcase. It is Houston's longest running show choir. In my younger days, I sang and traveled with Up With People and sang with the Norwegian National Opera Company. Best wishes, Lindsey J Pollock

| MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
WHY SHOULD I JOIN PTA? We all want our children to think school is important. We want them to respect their teachers and look forward to attending class. We want them to feel a sense of pride when they say their school’s name. Joining PTA will help foster these feelings in our children. When our children see that we, as parents, think school is important… they will follow in our footsteps. When they see us become involved in what happens at their school, they feel a sense of pride. When they see us working with their teachers and their principal, to make their school a better place to be, they want to be a part of it too. We all want what is best for our children. The PTA works hard to do what is best for the students at our school. When you join the PTA you have a say in what goes on at our school. You help make the school a better place for your child. Becoming a PTA member gives you a louder voice than you have on your own. You become part of a bigger whole. We need you to make good things happen. Membership is $5.00 per person. Classes that have 100% participation - meaning one paid member per student - will received a pizza party compliments of your PTA. Our PTA membership chairperson is Torrance Earle and Isela Villareal. Email either to find out more about joining the PTA: t_earle@yahoo.com or iselajv@msn.com respectively

GARDEN OAKS ELEMENTARY: URBAN HARVEST GRANT RECIPIENT Urban Harvest, a local nonprofit supporting the Houston area for more than ten years, has awarded our school a grant in partnership with Houston Garden Club to begin an after school gardening program. This is a hands-on program with activities in science, math, and other core subjects as well as encouraging good nutrition and teamwork skills. These classes provide opportunities for the creation and exploration of habitat gardens, ponds, vegetable, and fruit gardens. Lessons are connected to state objectives, and garden instructors utilize many curricula in the fields of environmental education, nutrition and science. The program will include both classroom and field work. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

TEACHER APPRECIATION
Every young mind needs a spark to light the way to a brighter future through learning — and teachers are that spark. In 1985, National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week, which is May 4-8 this year, to honor the dedicated men and women who lend their passion and skills to educating our children.
National PTA has long promoted the partnership of parents and teachers, recognizing that when parents and teachers work together, all children under their care benefit. Teacher Appreciation Week is a special time that gives parents the chance to show how grateful they are for the many excellent teachers who nurture the intellectual and social development of their children. The week also gives parents the opportunity to rededicate themselves to the parent-teacher partnership.
I encourage you and your PTA to recognize all that teachers do to contribute to the lives of children through expressions of appreciation from students and parents that say “thank you.” Teachers, in partnership with parents, truly make a difference.
