The purpose of Jackson County Happy Tails is to take in strays and owner-relinquished pets, and to rescue adoptable dogs from the local pound. Once they have been evaluated and deemed adoptable, we will strive to give them quality care until they are adopted out. We will also provide education for the community to increase responsible pet ownership.

Recent Accomplishments:

While we haven't given up on our dream to build an animal shelter here in Jackson County - we have started working on rescuing and adopting out dogs without having an actual shelter site. Two of our members are currently going daily to the City Pound to walk the dogs that are there. Our organization is making sure these dogs have clean kennels and are fed daily. Each week we are trying to take out dogs and once they are examined by either of our local veterinarians and deemed healthy for adoption, these dogs receive their vaccinations and are spayed/neutered. Happy Tails is paying for these services. We then are keeping them in foster homes until they can be taken to our PetSmart Adoption day. Our adoption fee for these dogs is only $75.00

Besides monetary donations for the building of our shelter, we are also seeking donations of dog food to feed the dogs we are rescuing. If you can help with any type of donation whether it is monetary or dog food, please call Cherie Robinson at 361-771-3909. If you'd like to help walk dogs at the City Pound, please call Susan Strickland at 782-8417. You must be 18 years of age or older.

In 2007, the number of dogs euthanized at the Edna City Pound was 199 and the the number of dogs adopted out was only 26. Happy Tails Organization started volunteering our time at the City Pound in June of 2008 and that year 100 dogs were euthanized and 66 adopted out. In 2009, (we worked there every day), the number of dogs euthanized was only 21 and the there were 136 adopted out. Wow! We do feel good about these statistics, think of how much more we could do with an actual shelter. Remember, we have the land and water. We even have an architect drawing up plans but not enough money to start building yet!
