SEPTEMBER 2008

    26th--DAL-TRANS FIELD TRIP, MESQUITE, TX.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is ready and eager to serve the citizens of North Texas with its newest transportation management center--DalTrans--which opened up January 23, 2008.

Students and families will learn about traffic congestion in a larger metropolitan city and how TxDOT and partnering agencies work together to keep traffic moving. TxDOT provides the traveling public with real-time traffic information which gives the motorist the ability to make educated decisions on the routes to take. The information gathered is obtained from various field devices installed along the area highways and disseminated to the public. Such devices include Closed Circuit TV cameras, dynamic message signs and vehicle detection units.

Whether it be a traffic accident, highway construction, special events or any other occurrence that effects traffic in the region, TxDOT has the technology to display real-time traffic information in several different formats, including dynamic message signs, the Internet, personal handheld devices or though the media (tv and radio).

The tour will last around 45 minutes to an hour. Included in the tour will be the viewing of a 10 minute video explaining TxDOT's Intelligent Transportation System, information on the job functions of the different agencies within the facility (TxDOT, DART, Dallas County and Texas Transportation Institute), and a tour of the 54,000 square foot facility.

DalTrans’ complete intelligent transportation system includes approximately 200 TxDOT cameras along more than 100 miles of roadway. TxDOT and the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office operate courtesy patrol trucks every day on 300 miles of area roadways. Patrols on the ground and traffic monitoring cameras allow DalTrans employees to immediately dispatch emergency help when it’s needed. In 2006, the Dallas area courtesy patrol responded to more than 97,000 incidents.

Deadline to sign up is September 19, 2008.

FEBRUARY 2009

26th--SIXTH FLOOR MUSEUM AT DEALEY PLAZA, DALLAS, TX.

This month we'll be touring the Sixth Floor Museum. The self guided tour includes a dramatic MP3 audio guide, narrated by people who were there. This audio guides visitors through the exhibition. The recorded tour incorporates excerpts from historic radio broadcasts and the voices of reporters, police officers, eyewitnesses, and others commenting on President Kennedy and his place in history. Narrator for the audio guide is Pierce Allman, the first journalist to broadcast from the Texas School Book Depository on November 22, 1963. The audio guide is also available in a student version.

The museum is divided into the following sections:

  • THE EARLY 1960s

This section outlines major social movements and political events, lifestyles and fashions of the era, and the national and international milieu. A part of this introductory section recalls the life and career of John F. Kennedy.

  • THE TRIP TO TEXAS

This brief section examines Kennedy's reasons for the trip to Texas. Using historic television footage, a short film illustrates the enthusiastic reception that the Kennedys received in Texas.

  • THE CORNER WINDOW

The sixth floor exhibit contains an accurate recreation of the southeast window area as it looked on November 22, 1963. Adjacent are photographic enlargements and radio teletype documentation of the first news of the assassination. The window area is protected from public access but is fully visible.

  • VIEWS INTO DEALEY PLAZA

Views from the sixth floor and seventh floors onto Dealey Plaza and the motorcade route speak volumes about the events of November 22, 1963. All south-facing windows are available for viewing.

  • THE CRISIS HOURS

The events of the weekend, from noon Friday to midnight Monday, are outlined in this section. A film, composed entirely of historic film footage and audio broadcasts with no additional narration, summarizes the events leading up to the funeral. Along one wall, a full chronology explains the sequence of events as they unfolded in Dallas and in Washington, D.C. Another film analyzes national and world reaction to the assassination without spoken words. That film features pertinent footage from the Kennedy funeral, plus seldom-seen material about prayer vigils in India and torch light parades in Germany. The 10-minute film is presented in the first of two seated theaters incorporated into the exhibition. Adjacent to the theater, visual displays document the swearing in of President Lyndon B. Johnson and global tributes in memory of President Kennedy.

  • THE INVESTIGATIONS

There have been four major, official investigations into the crime, beginning with the local investigations in November, 1963. This section places the investigations into historical sequence, outlining the participants, the procedures, and the major findings. A film explains the chronology of investigations over a 25-year period, and visual displays examine the acoustical evidence, photographs, forensic and ballistics tests, and other evidence examined during each major investigation. A 10 X 10 foot model of the Dealey Plaza area that was prepared by the FBI for the Warren Commission in 1964, on loan from The National Archives in Washington, D.C., is also on display.

  • WHO DID IT?

Polls reveal that nearly 80% of the American public believes that President Kennedy was killed as a result of a conspiracy. Alleged conspirators and their motives are discussed in this section. Criticisms of the various investigations are explained historically in this section as well.

  • THE LEGACY

A 10-minute film hosted by Walter Cronkite deals with the long-term consequences of the assassination—such as Kennedy's legacy of hope, the impact of his administration's programs, and the influence of his death at home and abroad.

  • THE CORNER STAIRCASE

The sixth floor exhibit also recreates the area where the rifle was found. The display is based on police department photographs from the day of the assassination. (The rifle is not on view.)

    Admission costs are:

  • Adults---$10.50
  • Children (ages 6-18)---$6.00

Deadline to sign up is February 20, 2009.
