Our 2008-2009 schedule offers 4 to 6 volunteer projects interspersed throughout the school year. Some volunteer activities will also include a field trip.

When signing up for field trips, volunteer activities or social events please include your FULL NAME, contact information and number of adults and children attending, INCLUDING THEIR AGES. It is very important that you RSVP to ensure you are notified in the event an activity has to be rescheduled. Volunteer projects are open to Hearts & Hugs members only.

SEPTEMBER 2008:

    12th--CHILDREN'S MEDICAL CENTER, DALLAS, TX.

This month, our volunteer project will benefit Children's Medical Center of Dallas.

Children’s Medical Center Dallas is private, not-for-profit, and is one of the largest pediatric healthcare providers in the nation. As the only academic healthcare facility in North Texas dedicated exclusively to the comprehensive care of children from birth to age 18, Children’s provides patient care ranging from simple eye exams to specialized treatment in areas such as heart disease, hematology-oncology and cystic fibrosis. In addition, Children’s is a major pediatric kidney, liver, intestine, heart and bone marrow transplant center. As the primary pediatric teaching facility for The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, the medical staff at Children’s conducts research that is instrumental in developing treatments, therapies, and greater understanding of pediatric diseases.

Our project will consist of preparing craft baskets and food baskets.

  • CRAFT BASKETS: Help stock craft and toy closets throughout the hospital with items including crayons, washable markers, coloring books, activity books, stickers, small bottles of bubbles, and child safety scissors etc.

  • FOOD BASKETS: A family whose child is in the ICU doesn't always think about where they will get their next meal. So, help Children's take snacks to them! Fill baskets with prepackaged foods such as crackers, tea bags, hot chocolate, bottled water, juice boxes, granola/fruit bars, sealed fruit cups, etc.

When signing up for this project, please state which basket/s you and your family plan to prepare, along with how many.

Deadline to sign up is September 1, 2008.

NOVEMBER 2008:

13th--CORNERSTONE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT HOMELESS MINISTRY, DALLAS, TX.

The Cornerstone Community Development Corporation, (CCDC) exists to respond to the needs of residents living in the South Dallas and Fair Park communities. This historic community has suffered the ravages of becoming a transitional area with the loss of businesses, deteriorating housing and the influx of low-income populations. Underemployment and unemployment have characterized these neighborhoods along with the accompanying problems of low-performing schools, single parent families, teenage pregnancy, youth violence, substance abuse, crime and homelessness.

The mission of CCDC is to assist residents in breaking out of the cycle of poverty and to nurture them in living productive lives as they give back to their community.

Homeschoolers Hearts and Hugs members will be meeting to help serve lunch to the homeless clients. In addition to serving lunch, we are encouraged to interact with the clients through conversation. I'm told many are willing to share their story of what put them in their current situation with a little prompting.

In addition to serving lunch, it would be great if we could make up goody bags to hand out to the clients. These bags should contain prepackaged snack items such as cheese crackers, granola/fruit bars, juice boxes, etc. You may also include a drawing from your child or words of encouragement. You and/or your student/s may want to approach your local grocery store and ask for donations of snack items. Cornerstone has estimated a need of approx. 200 bags.

Cornerstone also welcomes donations of coats or blankets since we ill be going into the cold weather months.

When signing up, please indicate how many bags you and your family will be providing, and whether or not you have any blankets or coats to donate.

Deadline to sign up is October 31, 2008.

DECEMBER 2008: CHRISTMAS CARD MAIL-OUT TO ROCKWALL COUNTY MEALS ON WHEELS RECIPIENTS/ASSISTED LIVING

This month, we will once again be sending Christmas Cards to the elderly people in the Rockwall County County Commission on Aging Program. (Meals on Wheels and Reese Manor Assisted Living) This was such a popular volunteer project last year that we provided over 1,000 cards to Rockwall County elderly residents! The agency said it really helped brighten the days of a lot of people!

I'm told some of these people receive very little to no mail, visitors, etc. so it is especially important that we remember them during the holiday season.

Because this project doesn't require you to leave your home, it is great for anyone...even those of you who live in the outer-lying areas!

Each participating family is asked to either make or buy Christmas Cards that will be mailed directly to the Rockwall County Commission on Aging. (in one envelope) The agency will then distribute the cards with the meals!

Families are asked to mail their cards NO LATER than December 5, 2008. This will allow the staff time to sort the cards for delivery.

Deadline to sign up is November 1, 2008, which should give everyone time to either make or address store bought cards.
