Each school year, we offer a variety of volunteer projects interspersed throughout the year. Some volunteer activities will also include a field trip.

Members of Homeschoolers Hearts and Hugs who participate in volunteer projects are also eligible to register for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award program with Hearts and Hugs being their certifying organization.

When signing up for field trips, volunteer activities or social events please include your FULL NAME, contact information and number of adults and children attending, INCLUDING THEIR AGES. It is very important that you RSVP to ensure you are notified in the event an activity has to be rescheduled. Since the majority of our activities require we confirm the number of participants prior to the event, please abide by sign up deadlines.

Volunteer projects are open to Hearts & Hugs members only.

FEBRUARY 2012--SPAY DAY FLYER DISTRIBUTION FOR KCAAP, CRANDALL, TX.

This month, we will be helping spread the word about Spay Day 2012 services! Our families will help distribute flyers announcing low cost options for spay-neuter services in the North Texas area.

If you have ever visited a shelter or city/county pound, you know how bad the animal over-population is. By helping distribute these flyers to area businesses, you will have a HUGE impact on helping reduce the future pet over-population!

Helping out is as simple as contacting businesses you go to anyway and asking permission to leave flyers! This can be incorporated into your regular errands, grocery shopping, doctor appts., oil changes, etc.

All you need to do to get involved is contact us with your full name and the city/area you plan to distribute flyers in.

MAY 2012

4th---COLONIAL LODGE ASSISTED LIVING CENTER CUPCAKE SOCIAL, TERRELL, TX.

Once again, our group has committed to participate in the Silver Lining program, formerly known as the Texas State Adopt-A-Nursing Home program. Over the years, we have been involved with and visited various nursing homes and assisted living centers. In 2011, Homeschoolers Hearts and Hugs won the DADS Vision Award in the area of Wellness for our service and committment to the elderly!!

The core goal of Silver Lining is to:

  • *enhance quality of life through meaningful social connections and person-centered activity planning

  • *provide health and wellness opportunities for residents and volunteers through these connections

  • *increase intergenerational connections and service-learning projects for youth

  • *increase community inclusion by involving residents first in their facility community and then in the greater local community

All our Silver Lining volunteer projects will take place at the Colonial Lodge Assisted Living Center located in Terrell, TX.

Many of these residents are quite mobile and enjoy a variety of activities. All residents live in their own private quarters, similar to an efficiency apartment. The facility provides them with weekly housekeeping service, as well as laundry service, three meals per day, and transportation.

Hearts and Hugs has visited the facility several times within the 2011-2012 school year. Of course, our families are always welcome to drop in and visit on their own if they choose to do so. (just check with the Activity Director prior to be sure there isn't a scheduling conflict)

For our last visit of the school year, we'll be hosting a Cupcake & Punch Social!

Donations of napkins, styro-foam cups, sugar free cupcakes and sugar free punch are needed.

If you and your family would like to attend this social and help brighten the day of some very special residents, please contact us.

WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF PLANNING AND CONFIRMING VOLUNTEER PROJECTS FOR THE 2011-2012 SCHOOL YEAR. PROPOSED PROJECTS WILL BENEFIT THE HOMELESS/UNDERPRIVILEGED, THE ELDERLY, CHILDREN, MILITARY/VETERANS AND ANIMALS. BE SURE TO CHECK BACK IN LATE SPRING FOR ALL THE DETAILS!
