WHAT DO TACTICAL MEDICS DO?
THE ROLE OF THE TACTICAL MEDIC
Tactical medics give medical care in forward areas where conventional EMS, lacking the necessary training and equipment, cannot or should not venture. This medical care can reduce the incidence of injury and death while increasing the moral of tactical officers.Tactical medics also provide general medical support to officers before, during, and after missions. Minor injuries and the environment can adversely affect officers' health and diminish their effectiveness. Medics treat ill officers and provide advice on:
Environmental issuesRest/work cycles,Hydration,Food & nutrition on extended operationsPreventive medicine,Medical record keepingMedical advocacy.The roles and responsibilities of a tactical medic vary greatly from team to team. The common thread that all tactical medics must have is the dedication to duty and self discipline to insure that he provide the best possible care for the team in which he/she serves. This would include being: proficient in pre hospital medical skills, know law enforcement tactics, movement, and weapons effects; be able to gain access to and communicate with EMS providers and hospital personnel; and be prepared and equipped to participate in tactical operations. THE ROLE OF THE ODESSA TACTICAL MEDIC In addition to the above duties, OTM also: Teach First Aid, CPR and AED procedures to SWAT Team membersProvide medical care for the canine units. Immediate treatment of injuries using Advanced Life Support proceduresBeing proficient in suturing techniques. Drive to and from call-out locationsAssisting, when needed with "breeching" a targets locationThe use of "Less Lethal" weapons.
Odessa tactical Medics are responsible for the medical support of 20 SWAT officers not including, up to five canine officers, the canines themselves and numerous support personnel.
