HOW DO I BECOME A TACTICAL MEDIC?
  • Minimum 3 years of permanent, uninterrupted service at the OFD and hold a Paramedic certification.
  • Overall work performance, behavior skill level and professionalism demonstrated during normal duties at OFD must be maintained at acceptable standards for consideration.
  • Recommendations from EMS Chief and Tactical Medic Liaison.
  • Oral review board.
  • Successful completion of physical agility testing of OPD obstacle course.
  • Medical problems and allergies must receive special evaluation due to strenuous physical activity and exposure to tear gases.
  • Comply with Team standards.

    DO YOU GET PAID?
Currently, tactical medics only get paid for "full call-outs" or "code 100's". All search warrants and training are reimbursed with comp-time.

    DO YOU CARRY GUNS?
The role of the Odessa Tactical Medic is support - while they are trained to handle and render safe all of the team's weapons, none are armed .

DO YOU HAVE TO BE A "COP"?
No. In some organizations the cross training of police officers to medics and vise-versa is a requirement. OTM does not require it's medics to have had or obtain any law enforcement certification.

    HOW MUCH DO YOU TRAIN?
Tactical Medics must meet the same training requirements as the police officers. Tactical Medics train 10 hours a month with the SWAT Team in addition to any other training required by the department.

DO YOU LEARN ANY ADDITIONAL SKILLS AS A TACTICAL MEDIC?
In addition to the required state skills, (The State of Texas currently teaches and test the National Registry curriculum) Tactical Medics also learn skills such as:

  • Digital Intubation
  • Sutures
  • First Aid and care for K-9 units
  • Rapid assessment and treatment skills unique to a tactical environment.
