Sanshou is a form of Chinese wushu/kungfu which has about three thousand years of history. Evidence abounds regarding the practice of wushu and sanshou throughout China’s long history. Modern sanshou competitions have been regularly held in Taiwan’s National Games since 1950s, sometimes under different names such as “Kuoshu Leitai”. In People's Republic of China (Mainland China), sanshou has been actively promoted by the government with great success, particularly since 1979. In 1985, China hosted the first International Wushu (including sanshou) Championship at Xian, China, where the International Wushu Federation Preparation Committee was formed. In 1990, wushu (including sanshou) was inducted as an official medal event in the Asian Games. In the same year, the International Wushu Federation (IWUF) was formally formed at Beijing, China, and was subsequently recognized and accepted as an international sport federation by the International Olympic Committee in 1999. IWUF currently hosts the biennial World Wushu Championships attended by athletes from more than fifty countries in five continents competing in taolu (routine) and sanshou sports.

Today in China, thousands of amateur and professional sanshou teams representing different provinces, cities, police, military, universities, and martial arts schools compete in different arenas all year round. Professional sanshou competitions are televised weekly throughout the country by nearly 200 TV stations, enjoying a high popularity next only to soccer.

On the other hand, sanshou has been growing rapidly throughout the world, particularly in countries such as Brazil, Egypt, France, Great Britain, Iran, Japan, Korea, Russia, USA, and Vietnam. The performance of the athletes at various international events has reflected the respectable level of sanshou in their countries. The American Sanshou/Sanda Association believes that we have strong potential to become world’s best in sanshou, and we are committed to achieving such goal.
