Prospect of Sanshou to Become an Olympic Sport Wushu has been vying for the Olympic games in the 21st century. The prospect is now more promising than ever as Beijing has been selected as the hosting city for the 2008 Olympic Games. The Olympic Charter, which the International Olympic Committee (IOC) abide by, stipulates the following regarding the Olympic sports program and admission of sports (Rule 52):
In addition, the Charter requires that the international federation of the sport needs to be recognized by the IOC (Rule 51). The international federation of sanshou, International Wushu Federation (IWUF) at Beijing, China, has been recognized by IOC since 1999, and currently has 88 member countries from five continents. At its 113th meeting at Salt Lake City in February, 2002, the IOC formally recognized Wushu as an Olympic sport. As it stands, sanshou may become the next most popular combat sport upon entry to the international Olympics. |
