ASPCA PET POISON HOTLINE

The ASPCA has a poison control hotline phone number for pets. This is the only dedicated animal poison control hotline in the world manned by veterinarians, not telephone operators. The number is staffed 24/7 at (888) 4ANI-HELP or (888) 426-4435.

FERAL CAT HOTLINE

If you need assistance with feral cats, please call the San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition Hotline at 210-877-9067 and leave a message.

Resources for Rescue Groups, Adopters and Pet Owners

With one of the largest stray pet populations in the country, many San Antonians are unaware of the many rescue groups and shelters who selflessly serve to assist pet owners and adopters in finding and providing loving homes for homeless pets. It is our hope that by providing an accurate and comprehensive list of pet rescue and shelter sites, as well as some of their events, more pets will be united with their forever homes.

WE ARE NOT A RESCUE GROUP, BUT SIMPLY A CENTRAL POINT OF CONTACT.
Think of us as a receptionist -- directing you toward the best resources for help and information.

There is an Indian legend which says when a human dies there is a bridge they must cross to enter into heaven. At the head of that bridge waits every animal that human encountered during their lifetime. The animals, based upon what they know of this person, decide which humans may cross the bridge.... and which are turned away.

Are Puppies Being
Sold Near You?

If you see puppies being sold on a corner, street or in a parking lot in San Antonio, please contact the parking lot store manager AND report this activity to 210-207-7273 (207-SAPD), 210-207-6650 or 311, as quickly as possible! This kind of activity is illegal without a permit, and it dangerous for the pups!

"Consider the fact that these puppies have probably never been to a veterinarian or received any of their vaccinations. They are at an increased risk of having intestinal parasites, distemper, and even parvo virus. Every purchase only supports this practice and keeps it going. Animals require a lot of time, money and energy to raise. . . Parents, be strong. Resist the urge to buy a pet on the roadside, at flea markets, or on impulse for your child. Instead, walk past these vendors and use the opportunity to teach your child about responsible pet ownership. If people stop buying pets off the street, then roadside vendors will stop selling them." Cathy M. Rosenthal, San Antonio Express-News

"It shall be unlawful for any person to sell, trade, barter, lease, rent, give away, or display for a commercial purpose any animal on any roadside, public right-of-way, commercial parking lot, or at any flea market or festival..."

Animal Assistance Hot Line

The Responsible Pet Owners Alliance is now part of San Antonio's "311" system, and many calls made to the city services' phone number regarding pet issues are being referred to the RPOA office. RPOA is handling these calls in an effort to help owners resolve problems and keep their cats and dogs rather than turning them over to shelters. Although the "311" affiliation is new, RPOA has operated a hot line since its inception 15 years ago. Education, suggestions concerning care and referrals to the appropriate agency, rescuer or animal group are offered to those who call in.

For direct access to the hot line, dial (210) 738-2273.
