2006
Total animals euthanized: 33,785
2004
Total animals euthanized: 48,361
Do these numbers look big to you? They should! The sheer volume of animals coming into animal control is overwhelming. Even more overwhelming is the percentage of these that are owner surrenders - nearly 1/3! Please do not adopt a pet if you are not committed to care for this animal (physically, emotionally and financially) for the rest of its life. This could mean the next 15-20 years!
While the euthanasia rate around the nation has plummeted over the past two decades, it has nearly doubled here in San Antonio, reaching nearly 50,000 animals in 2004.
Nearly nine of 10 animals that enter the pound were trucked out to the landfill. Included in that statistic were ALL puppies and kittens under 4 months of age and virtually all owner-surrendered animals.
