 Meeting and Event Calendar

Fall 2009 Schedule
(meetings are every other Tuesday at 7 PM in Sea 4.244 - the Psychology Library)
September 8, 2009
The Plan: We will be introducing our officers, going over what you need to know about our organization, and designing t-shirts for the year.
Free Pizza and Drinks!
What Happened: Our first meeting had a great showing. Thank you so much for coming, everyone!
We had a lot of fun, especially designing our brand new shirt. Here is a picture of all of the people who made a contribution to our marvelous design!
Ashley Ricks, Alexandra Roberts, Charlyn Laserna, Alana Harrison, Megan Rudy, Marlem Cavazos (back). Andrea Sanchez, Meagan Sachs, Natasha Ghosh, and Tina Smith (front).
We will have a picture up of the new t-shirt soon!
September 22, 2009
The Plan: Dustin Warren and Tiffany Garret will speak to us about their experiences as school counselors at Baty Elementary School. They will be speaking about their educational backgrounds and answering any questions about their education, experiences, and jobs.
Einstein's Bagels and refreshments!
What happened: Dustin and Tiffany were very informative about their educational paths, and the ins-and-outs of their responsibilities as school counselors. Both earned Master's degrees, and Tiffany shared with us that she works as a school counselor while at the same time working as a Licensed Professional Counselor in private practice. It was very educational, and also a lot of fun.

The Plan: Debbie Trammel, the volunteer coordinator at Austin State Hospital, will be coming to speak to us about the hospitals programs and ways you can get involved, as well informing of us the various ways one can come to be employed in a setting such as ASH. This will be an amazing opportunity for those WIP members who are interested in psychiatry or other careers that involve treating those with serious and/or long-term mental illnesses, as well as very informative for those who are looking to expand their volunteer experience and resume.
Sandwiches and other refreshments will be served.
What happened:
We had a really great meeting this week. Barbara, a social worker from Austin State Hospital, came to speak to us about the hospital and the ways you can volunteer there.
If you're interested in volunteering, go to:
ashvolunteers.org
They have a Pet Partner program, for those with charismatic dogs, as well as the Caps Buddy Program for those who want to work with the kids at ASH (you must be at least 21 to work with the kids). Also, there is a more general volunteer program. If you're interested, go to the website, fill out the application, and make sure to contact Debbie Trammell (the volunteer coordinator) for an interview.
Barbara also shared that ASH hires Psychiatric Nursing Assistants. There are no educational requirements, and you can work part time. If you think you'd like to get some experience working in a psychiatric setting, this would be a great opportunity. To learn more, you can visit:
https://accesshr.hhsc.state.tx.us/psp/PPASOT2/PPASOT2documentsportal_paflashnews.html
WIP also has some volunteer opportunities coming up. First is Project Hope. It is at the Recreation Center at ASH (visit the website above for more info) this Sunday (10/11) from 9-5. It's really fun; you'll be painting pictures that represent hope to be displayed in the hospital. Just make sure to sign in, and we'll be checking with the volunteer coordinator to see if any WIP members showed up.
Longhorn Halloween is Sunday, October 25th from 2-5 pm at the Frank Erwin center. WIP will have a booth set up, and there are several shifts available. Email us at womeninpsych@gmail.com for more info and to sign up.
There is also a Thanksgiving Lunch on Tuesday, November 24th, from 11-1. Email us if you think you'll be available and would like to participate.
These are all great chances to get volunteer points (which you need to qualify for an officer position and the end of the year banquet).
If you have any questions, feel free to email us.
Thanks everyone!!!

The Plan: Have questions about what Psychology classes you should take this semester? Come to our bi-annual Professor and Class Review session. We will be going over each of the Psychology course offerings in the spring, and sharing our knowledge of which classes you should sign up for (and which you should avoid). This is a great resource for all students planning on taking Psych. classes in the spring, and the more people who come, the more inside info will be available to everyone.
Free Ice Cream!
What Happened: We all got a lot of great info for our Spring classes, but it's all strictly confidential!
November 3, 2009
The Plan: We will be having our Grad School panel, in which several UT Psych. Grad Students will share their experiences with applying to and attending grad school, and also answer any questions you might have. This is definitely the place to be if you are considering a graduate degree. Refreshments will be served!
What happened: Thanks so much to Jamie Confer, David Lewis, Molly Ireland, and Lisa Dawn Hamilton for generously sharing their experiences surrounding applying to and attending graduate school, and answering all of our questions!
November 17, 2009
The Plan: Ramon Gomez from UT's School of Social Work will be coming to speak to us about the opportunities available with a graduate degree in Social Work, as well as about the application process.
This will also be the last opportunity to qualify for the End of the Year Banquet and/or an officer position for next fall by paying your dues, buying a t-shirt, and earning points.
We will also be having a cookie mixer, in which free cookies and lots of yummy toppings will be provided!
