NEWS
As we begin a new decade, UCA renews it's pledge to help members learn more about the making of letters using the broad-edged pen, the pointed pen, the round and flat brush and other tools. By so doing, we trust that skill level will improve, and members will find joy in creating beautiful letters of all styles.

Be sure to check the calendar (below this column) for the dates of all the monthly meetings. It will also give you information on upcoming workshops, exhibits and other UCA activities.

If you haven't paid your dues for 2010, be sure to send a check for $25.00 to Utah Calligraphic Artists, P.O. Box 1086 Draper, Utah 84020. This entitles you to come to monthly meetings and learn new skills and improve old ones. It also allows you to interact with other UCA members who are some of the best and most generous people you will ever meet!

UCA'S LIBRARY

Our guild is fortunate to own an extensive library. Several of the books explain how letters are made. They are written by some of the best teachers in the calligraphic field. Some books are filled with pages of beautiful calligraphic examples, and are inspirational to look at. Other books explain the history of writing and how our alphabet evolved. Still, other books are on subjects related to calligraphy, such as color theory. All these books are available to members of UCA!
Checking Out a Book
You will find a list of library books at the top of this column. Just click on Books in UCA Library and find the book you want. Contact our librarian, Jane Hales, and make arrangements to pick up the book at our next UCA meeting. Jane's email address is jj1148@msn.com. Make the subject "UCA Library Book," and she will get back to you ASAP. You can also contact Jane by clicking on her name in our "Members List" in this column below the calendar, and emailing from there. We encourage you to take advantage of this exceptional opportunity!

A REMINDER

UCA does not hold meetings in the summer months of July and August. There is no meeting in December, also.

A Website for Lettering Artists & Calligraphers Across the Mountain West!

UCA members attend monthly meetings and major workshops and practice various hands. Using the skills acquired in these endeavors, they create!

Utah Calligraphic Artists (UCA) was founded in 1979, and since that time, has actively sought to promote and encourage lettering arts throughout the state.

We sponsor classes, workshops, demonstrations and exhibits. Monthly meetings are held from January to June and from September to November. In these meetings, guild members review alphabets, learn techniques and other decorative skills to enhance their calligraphy.

At least once a year, a major workshop is held in which a world renowned calligrapher comes to share his or her expertise with guild members. The cost of these workshops is in addition to yearly dues of $25.00.

As a member of UCA, you will expand your knowledge and appreciation of calligraphy, improve your technical skills and meet others who share your interest in the lettering arts. Members receive monthly mailings and all issues of the guild newsletter. We encourage anyone who is interested in calligraphy to attend one of our meetings at no charge.

We are looking forward to our April Workshop with Barbara Close. She will be teaching her Textured Letters class on April 16 and 17 at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley City. We will be designing alphabets and then using various treatments to add color, texture and embellishment. Participants should come prepared to use watercolors, pastels, Zentangles, collage, etc. In this class we will have fun while we create wonderful letters! As you can tell from the above photo, Barbara is warm and personable. This should be a great weekend!
