NEWS
As we begin a new decade, UCA renews it's pledge to help members learn more about the making of letters using the broad-edged pen, the pointed pen, the round and flat brush and other tools. By so doing, we trust that skill level will improve, and members will find joy in creating beautiful letters of all styles.

Be sure to check the calendar (below this column) for the dates of all the monthly meetings. It will also give you information on upcoming workshops, exhibits and other UCA activities.

If you haven't paid your dues for 2010, be sure to send a check for $25.00 to Utah Calligraphic Artists, P.O. Box 1086 Draper, Utah 84020. This entitles you to come to monthly meetings and learn new skills and improve old ones. It also allows you to interact with other UCA members who are some of the best and most generous people you will ever meet!

UCA'S LIBRARY

Our guild is fortunate to own an extensive library. Several of the books explain how letters are made. They are written by some of the best teachers in the calligraphic field. Some books are filled with pages of beautiful calligraphic examples, and are inspirational to look at. Other books explain the history of writing and how our alphabet evolved. Still, other books are on subjects related to calligraphy, such as color theory. All these books are available to members of UCA!
Checking Out a Book
You will find a list of library books at the top of this column. Just click on Books in UCA Library and find the book you want. Contact our librarian, Jane Hales, and make arrangements to pick up the book at our next UCA meeting. Jane's email address is jj1148@msn.com. Make the subject "UCA Library Book," and she will get back to you ASAP. You can also contact Jane by clicking on her name in our "Members List" in this column below the calendar, and emailing from there. We encourage you to take advantage of this exceptional opportunity!

BASIC CALLIGRAPHY SUPPLIES

Often we are told to Òbring your basic calligraphy suppliesÓ or Òalways stuff.Ó  Following is a list of the basic equipment one should have, plus a list of those other tools that are nice to have, but are not essential.  Most calligraphers begin with a box to hold the tools—a fishing tackle box or small toolbox works very well.

ESSENTIAL TOOLS:

á      Apron

á      Paper Towels (for wiping nibs & cleaning up)

á      Pencils—Soft and hard lead

á      Pencil Sharpener

á      White Vinyl Eraser

á      Bone Folder

á      X-acto Knife & Blades (#11 blades are most versatile)

á      Nib Holder & Variety of Nibs.  Speedball C-2, C-1 & C-0 nibs are very good,

á      and they are readily available along the Wasatch Front.  A set of Mitchell, Tape or Brause nibs are excellent for smaller writing.  They can be ordered from John Neal or Paper and Ink Arts.  You can find links to these sellers on the UCA website.  UCA may also have sets.  Check with Lee Sim.

á      Practice Ink--Higgins Eternal is a good ink for practice, and can be obtained locally.

á      Graph Practice Pad—1/8 inch grid.  UCA usually has some for sale.  Check with Lee Sim before the scheduled meeting.

á      Scissors

á      Glue stick

á      Masking Tape

á      Rulers—A metal ruler with a cork backing and a plastic C-Thru ruler with a 1/8 inch grid.  Each should be 18 inches long if possible.

NICE TO HAVE, BUT NOT ESSENTIAL TOOLS:

á      Adjustable Hollow Easel & Board—Contact Liz Margetts for a good source.

á      Gouache & Watercolors

á      Mixing Tray

á      Paint Brushes—Various sizes, both flat and round.

á      Water Container

á      Colored PencilsPrisma brand is good and watercolor pencils come in handy, also.

á      Self-Healing Cutting Mat

á      Bottle of Water with Dropper Top or Pipettes—These let you easily put water into watercolors, gouache or ink.

á      Restickable Glue Stick

á      Large T-Square
